Hm,
I do unsoldering the caps. My solder points are on the side towards to the chip. So I can test the connection from one leg of the chip into the wire of mine.
Is this wrong?
I thought I need the function of the chip?

Greetings from Germany

Heinz

Code:
                                              ||
<USB host> --- USB cable --- <bridge IC> --Y--||--X-- SATA Tx/Rx -- <MCU>
                                              ||
                                           capacitor

Solder at "X", not Y.

Dear fzabkar

Please take a deeper look at my first photo:

Here you can see I am at the first solder point towards to the chip. Are you with me?

Best Regards,

Heinz

OK,
so the chip is responsible for USB not for the serial? Than, yes I am at the wrong side ... You are right.

I cannot solder a new usb connector in place of the one broken. I've already seen the links you gave but it didn't help me and I don't want to replace by a sata connector :s

I don't really know how to repair it now :(

I've find a way to make it working temporarely.
I've solder the power like on hadner's screenshot
and I've solder the TX/RX like that :

When I connect the HDD, it works and I can recover my datas but regularely it fails, I just have to unplug and plug again.

Thank you all for your help ;)

Hello, just joined because a friend of mine has that HDD with an unsoldered connector and wanted some help to get his datas back.
I tried soldering a new connector even tho there were 2 damaged (data ones) traces. I thought I 'd use some conductive paint for the damaged traces.
Had the USB plugging sound in Windows followed by an "Unrecognized USB device" message. Gave up with that method.

Then after reading through the thread, I tried the quoted wiring.

-So now Windows knows the HDD is plugged (USB plugging sound) but the drive doesn't appear in the panel although the "Samsung S2 USB driver" seems to be properly installed in the device manager.
-Blue light is solid and the disk spins.
-EaseUS Partition Master tells me the HDD doesn't have a letter and only allows me to delete the partition. Same in Windows storage managing window.

So my questions are :
Is there a chance my first failed attempt somehow erased the disk or damaged some chip on the board so the datas can't be retrieved?
Or there is absolutely no way a disk can erase itself without being properly told by an OS?

Thanks for your answers!

In my mind, if you have not told to format, than nothing is deleted.

You can use my photos above for soldering. It will work.

Best Regards,

Heinz

solder under a microscope or at least 5x for best results. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, find someone that can. It is very easy to totally botch it, best intentions notwithstanding.

Hi, that's what I wanted to know thanks. I assume the disk not showing up is because I have to name and format it.
I'll wait for my friend to get back to me... He might have erased his HDD himself trying to recover the datas.

I didn't have a SATA cable so I couldn't do the soldering as you.

Thanks!

I find the Mini USB connector easy to solder enough so I just use a magnifying lamp to check. But indeed I should have checked with a microscope when I tried to repair the traces with the conductive ink... you can easily over paint and screw everything up badly

Can you post pictures of your soldering ? Maybe someone can spot something missing.

Here's some pics. I have nothing to do with the damaged traces :)

Ok, as you are posting in a thread where people are converting the drives to SATA, I thought you was doing that also.

I do not see where you connected the wires for power to the drive. With the state of the traces, it would be better to replace the connector, solder the pins that still exist ( they are the ones for power ) , then fix the missing ones with jumper wires, thinner thatn those you used.

Also, without power to the board, trace and measure continuity to connected places in the circuit to the left of the connector. I think it was in a post of fzakbar in the old times people discussed about soldering defects in some componentes in that region ( I have fixed a couple of these drives where, along with replacing the connector, some of those componentes had to be resoldered ) .

Do you see any useful informations in this picture or are you referring to another window?

That's what I did first but I then chose to ditch the connector and cut of a regular USB cable and solder it directly. I thought it'd be easier to deal with the damaged traces.
Power and ground are soldered on the other side of the board, according to others' observations and pictures that have been verified.
Theoretically, such wiring should be no different than soldering a connector but now I'm not sure anymore.

I keep forgetting my multimeter... I think I saw the thread you were referring to. Is it that one ?

Then please check if there is 5V appearing in the corresponding pads where the old usb connector would be. Depending on where you soldered the VCC and GND wires, part of the circuit may have been left without energy.

That seems to be the thread, right.
Also, it makes me remember something : take a good look at those two resistors and the EMI suppressor, and make sure they didn´t got shorted with small residue of solder or conductive ink. ( been there ) .

I had to return the HDD without further investigating... and then... Tada! The HDD actually works on a Mac. As I'm not a Mac user, I would have never thought about that! Thank you all for your answers.
