I have a samsung drive I pulled from an enclosure. It is not spinning at all. My limited expertise told me to check if it has a blown tvs diode. When I check for continuity between the 5 volt and ground I do not get any. To me that means the tvs diode is good. Actually I am not sure this drive even has one. I labeled two parts "1" and "2" by the power connector, Here is what I know

-no continuity or an ohm reading of 1 when I put my meter on bother sides of part "2"
-one side of part "2" goes to ground and the other side goes to the 5 volt
-part "1" has continuity and both sides go to the 5 volt

Any help an giving me direction would be great
Does this drive have a tvs diode? If I was to guess, I would say no.

Thanks

Measure Vcore and Vio.

Does the drive attempt to spin up? Can you hear any sound, however faint?

no sound at all. I am embarrassed, I did not even barely notice that small tvs diode. How do I measure the vcore and vio?

I have an ohm reading of about .5ohm between vcore and 5volt and also the same with vio

Measure the voltages between ground and each of Vcore and Vio.

vcore = 2.5
vio = 1

Those voltages are OK.

Try to obtain a terminal log.

How to connect a terminal adaptor on a Samsung drive ?

BTW, did you test the drive in a PC? Some drives are configured to power up in standby (PUIS). Also, some enclosures won't spin up a drive unless they detect a USB host.

I'm betting a terminal output will show an "unpack fail" error (or something similar)

pcimage what does it mean when on terminal show "unpack fail"?

I have drive with this message in terminal:
Code:
ActiveFW : 00
FWVer : 0001
SATA PLL cal done
DDR size detected = 16MB

DDR size detected = 16MB
CACHED
Unpack Fail

I have disk ST500LM012. Drive is dead, don't spin any sound. I haven't tasted this drive with another PCB yet.
