This is (was) dual boot Win7/Ubuntu system. No indication of trouble (although I wasn't checking for it) until one day it wouldn't boot. Wasn't identified by UEFI. Information isn't critical but would be nice to get so want to try DIY. Virtually all the useful files are in the Win7 NTFS partition. I have read that Linux may be able to read the data so could try a linux live CD or plug it into the same PC that has a new hard drive and Ubuntu. But since the UEFI can't identify is this worth trying? I have done a bit of reading on this but I don't have any experience with HDD recovery.

What do you consider cost "not very high"? I asked one place and was quoted about $800 and that was just the starting point. Still wanted me to buy a drive to put the image on and the disclaimer it might go higher. How do you find a reputable but reasonable cost place?

In any case I want to try to do this myself as it's not critical I recover the files. I have TTL adapters from other projects that I can use. What are the logic levels? 3.3V? I can measure to be sure.

Direct SATA connection.

It does spin. I will do some more checking, download the programs and get more information.

Any tips on connectors for the TTL interface? The spacing of the pins is odd and measures about 0.070" pitch. The sockets I have are too big to fit. I could get sockets from a smaller pitch and use them.

Downloaded iso image with MHDD, burned CD, and ran this on PC with new drives to check it out on a good drive before on the bad drive. I get option to select drives:
1. Primary controller
3. Secondary controller
5. PC-3000
All the spaces below the selections are blank - not sure if this should show drives. When I try to select I just get "drive not ready" for any of them. The drives are working fine for normal use though.

Drives are SATA. Motherboard is ASRock Z87 Extreme4. I have looked at MHDD documentation several places and can't see what the issue is.

On the connector I remeasured more accurately and the pitch is 2 mm. This is a very standard pitch, just smaller than I have on hand (Mostly 0.1" stuff) so I will make up something.

I just wrote up a post but don't see it. Is this because of moderation of new member posts? It happened on one of my previous ones but I could see a notice about moderation that I don't see now.

I downloaded the iso with mhdd, burned a disk, and booted it. This was on my PC with new drives to see how it detected a good drive before using it on the bad drive. I got a selection menu:
1. Primary controller
3. Secondary controller
5. PC-3000 board

There were also some spaces between the selections that were blank but appeared to be for disk IDs or something like that. When I tried to select a drive I got "drive not ready" for any selections I tried. I have two SATA drives in the machine that work fine in normal operation.

I looked at several sites documentation but am not able to figure out what I should be doing or what is going wrong.

For the connector for TTL I remeasured more accurately and the pitch is 2 mm, which is a standard pitch. Most of my pin connectors are 0.1 inch so I will have to come up with something. It looks like Samtec series ESQT would work well or I may cut down something I have.

Set to IDE. MHDD detected my drives fine. Attached the bad drive. It didn't find it. UEFI didn't see it either. The drive made about 5 repeated noises that sounded like head seeking on power up.

I think it continues to spin but I will check again. No scratching or clicking noises. The only unusual sound is the soft buzz of the head seeking a few times. Will hook up a ttl cable. Do I need to enter any commands for initial look or just capture what it sends out?

Got the interface working with the help of a scope. 1.8V signals, 38,400 baud. Output pin from drive is next to ground pin. Here is the output:

Code:
Boot 0x40M

Spin Up
