So I know we've all been using some typical parameters for matching heads, but it doesn't seem to always be working with these stupid Rosewood drives.

Normally I try as much as possible to match first part of p/n, first three of serial, preamp as read from terminal(or ROM), and as a last resort by slider topography. Yet, that's not seeming to be enough with some of these.

I've got one here that I'm getting killed by. The original drive had only a single failed head, so I know the SA is perfectly fine. Original heads put back into the drive still works each time.

Patient:
P/N: 1R8174-568
S/N: WCC...
Preamp: 82 12
Family: Rosewood_8C
Date: Aug 2016

Donor 1:
P/N: 1R8174-568
S/N: WDZ...
Preamp: 82 12
Family: Rosewood_A5 (I'm guessing this failed as donor because it's a different family despite having same preamp and part number)
Date: Dec 2016

Donor 2:
P/N: 1R8174-568
S/N: WCC....
Preamp: C2 12 (I didn't bother trying this donor since the preamp reads out as different in terminal)
Family: Rosewood_8C
Date: July 2016

Donor 3:
P/N: 1R8174-286
S/N: WCC...
Preamp: 82 12
Family: Rosewood_8C
Date: Oct 2016
(I have no idea why these heads aren't working in the patient)

I know I'm not killing the heads in my process, because when I put heads back in their original drives they all still work just fine. But I can't get any replacement heads to work in the patient, or patient heads (3/4 of which are good) to work in donor drives. As far as I can tell the slider topography is exactly the same across all drives (except the one I didn't open because it's got a different preamp.

Does anyone know something about these drives that I'm missing here? A different factor that must be matched perhaps?

Anyone see anything in there that would make the heads not compatible? I don't.

You know what, maybe it's this line here:

Code:
Servo FW Rev: A5F8

Code:
Servo FW Rev: A566

So they're actually now changing the servo every month. I'm going to have to start charging much higher rates to deal with this crap.

Well,
This all matching is nonsense in rosewoods .Try using HDDsurgery Tools Sometimes  . Next Time Try The C2 Heads in 82 Also  . Also When the Preamp Matches Why The Heck Do you want to match other parameters ? . Also go easy on that top head screw ,Do not over tighten the poor baby it chokes :D

I actually did try the C2 heads (since the servo rev of that one matched) and it didn't work either. As I said before, all heads work perfectly back in their original drives. So obviously there is no problem with my head replacing process. Your comment is just nonsense!

I'd never waste my hard earned money on those worthless overpriced tools. Apex tools are working great, I've now done around 20 rosewood head swaps and haven't ruined a set of heads that way yet. The issue with this case is 100% related to heads compatibility. If you'd actually read any of my posts you'd have figured that out.

Well,
Get in touch with me in messenger or something i will talk about this in detail with you and make you understand this concept .I do 2 to 3 rosewoods a day .Today itself i purchased a stack of 10 brand new drives for rosewoods .You just need to understand how this crap drive work physically .Servo Rev has nothing to do with the heads ,What are you upto ,Servo is embedded into platters not into heads  .My comment is not nonsense its priced at 100000 dollars

PS : One more thing just try the so called overprice tool once and then you will know what we are talking about .Those E Tools Are GARBAGE .They do more damage then you can possibly imagine .Wanna Take This Challenge With Me right here in HDDGURU ? On Tools ,Welcome Anytime ,I had The Same View As Yours All Thanks To Nikola Sir its Changed .

From my understanding servo data is written to the platters with the heads in place (unless it has changed since someone explained this). So I can presume it is possible for the way/type of servo data to change which may not be read with different heads. I am not 100% certain of this so would appreciate your input.

Question ,
When Head Preamp is Same Then Why Would it Not ?

I think we are all shooting in the dark here a little until we know more about these drives. The issue maybe something totally unrelated to pre-amp or any know parameter. I am sure we will learn more at time goes by.

Here is a list of drives we recovered
http://firmware.hddsurgery.com/?manufac ... osewood_8C
and
http://firmware.hddsurgery.com/?manufac ... osewood_A5

In Data recovery it is not what you know but who you know ( more then in any other field )
When you burn all the bridges behind , you end up with the problem and over priced service. Witch leads to less job less money less knowledge.
We recover 95% of them with one donor ( 5% come with a scratch )

I had similar issue. I just check several other donor heads and found good one for this particular drive. I don't see any big problems with rosewoods.

Many people do not want to be named on forums. If they have a signature like we do, then they do not care if they are named. But others have many reasons not to want to be named. They may work for large DR company and it might be against company policy to go onto forums to help others out, so naming them might get them fired. Others might not offer advice if they know who the OP works for etc. So its generally bad form to name people and companies on forums.

Just sayin......
