I am an african photographer who has been online checking for a solution.

The panel of my wd40nmzw-11gx6s1 4Tb got damaged as I was inserting the USB cable.
I assumed swapping the PCB with one from a new HDD of the same model and PCB number would solve my challenge.
I have done so and still cant access the info on the drive.

Disk management shows HDD without any capacity and not initialized.
Recovery software shows just 500B accessible of the drive.
No clicking sounds heard.

From research online I discovered that the ROM may differ and in this case, the patient HDD was made Nov 27 2016 and the donor PCB HDD was made 21 December 2017. Attached are the photos of the Patient and Donor PCB.

Sending my HDD from Africa through courier is quite expensive plus.
I want to find out if there is any DIY method I can use as a second alternative to solve this challenge.

Thank you for your anticipated positive response.

PS.
I don't mind if I need to pay for the knowledge/information/help
Thank you.

Insert pics of the original board and usb connector. Maybe it can be repaired.

Hi. A photo of the pcb and connector would be useful. You might be lucky. In this type of scenario often it is the usb 3 side of the usb connector which suffers the damage. It is always a good idea to try using a usb 2 type connector before getting in deeper. This simple check can often pay dividends. Good luck!

I'm based in South Africa, we do recoveries from other African countries often, shipping isn't an issue. Busy with two from Zimbabwe at the moment. Would you like to make contact and I can assist?

OK, not easily repairable!

Just to confirm, you DO have to transfer the ROM chip (8-legged chip top left of your pic) as it is 100% unique to your drive.

Assuming no further issues, then a replacement PCB from exact same model with a ROM transfer should work.

In our experience however, often we come across cases like this with broken connector but the drive has other issues such as firmware problems and/or media issues. What we suspect is that people believe there is a bad connection, so “wiggle” the connector trying to get it to work and break it!

Good luck!
