ST318305LC how to change heads?

November 26th, 2018, 4:51

Hello HDD Gurus,

I have this SCSI Drive that have the Heads damaged, but the problem is i can't remove the magnet to remove the original heads. Does anyone knows how to remove the magnet? i upload pictures from the strange magnet. The screws below the chassi only holds the magnet was one. Above only have one screw, in the other side is like a interior screw. Thank you very much. Regards :)

disconnect the head cable from the PCB in the drive.Slide the heads off the platter and make sure they stay out of the platter. Put the cover back on and put the head screw in. Flip over and remove the head and magnet screws. Carefully flip back over and pull up the top cover with the heads and magnet attached. Unscrew the heads from the top cover and slide the heads out of the magnet.

Reverse procedure to get back in.

It is not fun

good luck

Okay, I see what you saying. Thank you very much.
Yeah, it's not easy at all... I change thousands of heads along my 10 years of work and no one was hard enough to make me think how the weck I remove this.. always learning. 8)
I'm going to make the procedure tomorrow, I will tell you how it did. Thank again mate. :D

This is the exact procedure. It is very difficult and you need to try hard to not mess it up.
Apart from everything else, I was very puzzled on how to keep the heads seperated (there is not enough space to work with them). I had to use a trimmed toothpick with glued seperators on it. Fun times.

There is a spacing problem sometimes due to the chassis pillar right in front of the disk where the heads would be coming off the disks. So, alternatively can leave the heads on the disks in parking area. After removing the chassis base as explained in earlier post, then can do regular head stack removal like on any heads-on-disk drives, except it is in weird/reversed manner.

Okay when i try to put the heads outside the platter, there is two cilinders that i can't remove. I try it with pliers but it doesnt came off. Here is more pictures of the issue.

labtech is correct, if you cannot get the the head off cleanly from what i previously said, keep them parked on the platter and you will need to screw in the platter screw from the top as well and then unscrew the washer with the three gaps in it on the motor assembly under the drive and when you flip it back over you will be removing the full motor stack and heads and magnet.

so when you are done you top cover will have everything screwed into it when you slide the bottom casing off.
