hello.

a couple of days ago my Western Digital WD800JD SATA HDD died.
the BIOS wouldn't detect the drive. so i checked the data and power connections and they were in proper working order.
but i noticed that the Smooth L6283 1.3 IC chip on the PCB got extremely hot while the drive was powered up.
the chip and the surrounding components are not visibly damaged. and the rest of the PCB and components look normal too.
if it is just the chip that is damaged, would it be possible to just replace the PCB with another PCB from another HDD of the same model?

And transfer U12 from patient to donor PCB

i know not to open the drive itself.
i think the drive is spinning. i know that i can feel the drive spin up when the drive powers up , but i'm not sure if it continues to spin.
and the heads don't move when the drive is powered up.
i'm also too poor to even think of using a data recovery service.

please disregard my last post. there is some information in it that is incorrect.
@Spildit
the drive is a Western Digital WD Caviar SE. model WD800JD-60L8A5.
from what i can tell (while holding the drive. i know i know. not the smartest thing to do but i was grounded)
the drive does not spin up when the drive is powered up. and thankfully there are no clicking sounds.
as far as the health of the drive. there were no bad sectors. the drive was in good working order the night before it died.
in the morning when i started up the system, the hdd was in it's current condition.

this is the MCU that is on the board

just try to change pcb and see what is happening.if spining, change the original ROM chip to DONOR pcb.
if you have no experience with soldering work don't do it your self.

i will try swapping the PCB out for a "new" one as soon as i can get a hold of a donor drive.
thank you all for your help. if this works, you all will have saved me a lot of time and hard work trying to recreate alot of the files that are on this HDD.

EDIT:
and another pin just broke off.
it is clear now that just my soldering iron and a small needle is not good enough for the job.

thank you all for your help.
but sadly i can't afford the cost of a DR center or even the service listed by Splidit.
if anyone knows of a way i can recover the data without having to use an outside DR service, it would be a huge help to me.

sorry for the double post. for some reason i can't edit my last post.

i just installed the donor board on the patient drive. the drive spun up just fine with no clicking sounds.

first,i told you this. and secondly splidit give a very reasonable offer.

if you don't like to pay even solderding cost, what we do.

now you are far from DIY.

Best way to save the data if you can’t afford data recovery price , leave it as is until time when you be able to afford service. You did mess already and you probably do another mess . Don’t try anymore.

thanks.
firmware level work is well above my knowledge and skill.
sadly, i believe it is time to count this drive as a loss.

@Dananjaya:
i agree that Spildit's offer is a reasonable one. especially when compared to other DR services i've priced. however it's either recover my data, or pay the power bill.

@dragon..

yes. i can understand you situation. but i mentioned you about, only soldering work. it was very easy work for tech. and very cheap price like 0-10 usd.

now your original ROM damaged. without original ROM can't access your data.

now need ROM regen and need specific hardware tools for it.

if you have any important data, then don't take too long. bec.An oxide can be formed in the head,and motor error , filter damage.

Maybe a competent engineer can do something with the broken pins?

So one way of doing it would be to carefully remove whats left of the broken ic and fit it to the replacement board.
Then with a sharp scalpel one can very carefully scrape away the black material next to each broken pin just enough to expose the remains of the pin. Then solder a fine wires to the pcb and then to the ic exposed connections.

I have to say one almost requires the hand skills of a surgeon to do this but it can be done. Then quickly copy off the required data.

Please do not try to do this yourself but find somebody who is good with micro component level pcb repairs and the like. Maybe a competent mobile phone repair specialist who does it in house.

No not a waste of time.
I have had to do it several times for people and not just on WD drives. With success. :D
