Had a CF Card go corrupt while shooting (in camera)

Sent the card off to Drive Savers - they quoted 3,000 to 3,700 for recovery - but have come back and said they can't recover it.

I've seen some older threads on this group from those who sound like they might work somewhere or personally be able to dig deeper/do more than Drive Savers has time to do.

So, I'm curious, anyone have luck recovering data of a CF Card that a company like Drive Savers says they can't because:

"the controller and/or NAND chip components in your device had become so severely corrupted that even partial recovery was not possible"

If there's a person or company who would be worth trying, I'm 100% game as it would mean the world to me to recover this card.

Thanks!!

Just curious. I'm wondering how a controller becomes "corrupted".

Did DriveSavers actually open up the card? If so, could we see the PCB inside? Perhaps someone has experience with your particular controller.

I very much doubt the controller has failed (especially “corrupted”), presume they are indicating that the memory has failed so badly that they are unable to correct the bit errors well enough to recover.

Would be interesting to find out which card and controller it has, but agree that Arvika is your man!

If you are apprehensive about sending overseas yourself, but comfortable to send to Canada, I'd be happy to take a quick look and redirect to Arvika for you. You can send me a PM, if you are interested.

Is this the CF Card that initially came to Desert Data Recovery in Phoenix a couple of weeks back? It was then sent out to Drive Savers as your insurance company would only let Drive Savers work on it (which explains the price). If it is, I have some additional information on this case for anyone who plans on working on it. If not ignore this post.

What is worse? Insurance companies insisting on sending media to overpriced labs or labs that gouge because insurance is paying for it?

It reminds me of a 2 x Seagate SCSI RAID 1 that quoted $10K at a lab in the Toronto area. They gave all sorts of details to justify the high price, including time to reconstruct the complex RAID configuration. 100% BS.

Drive 1 - mirrored 100% with a couple of bad sectors (data was stale)
Drive 2 - needed a translator fix, mirrored 100% with no bad sectors, file system full accessible

Took us about an hour to do the whole thing. Odd thing is, we quoted less than $1K and the client decided that they didn't want the data, even though their deductible was $1K.

Anyway, that is off topic.

This is very true, I have known Jeremy for many years and he really does know what he’s doing as well as Michal:-)

I can't speak to others, but had never even heard of you until someone mentioned your company to me last week. I'm very familiar with Arvika and their capabilities, making it an easy referral at this point. Just a case of known vs unknown. Are your prices comparable to his, as well?

FWIW, I recommend you a lot elsewhere if customers are US based.

Dude, I even comment on your videos, I'm a fan ;)
