Lesson learned I need backups of my backups!
Is there any good software solution/tool to help automate two-level backups, I want my multiple computers to backed up to my first tier of external storages and like every month, have a compressed back up of those! As in plug in the disks and defining the schedule and forget about the rest?

I found Cobian Backup quite good but looks like it has been abandoned by the new owner for last 6 years, is there any free/open source app similar?

I see that Macrium Reflect is often recommended at Tom's Hardware.

It still works perfectly fine for me.

In the italian version of Tom's forum the most often recommended SW are Macrium Reflect and AOMEI Backupper

+1 for Macrium Reflect. I had used Acronis previously but Macrium is a different level.

I have no experience with anything else but Macrium Reflect, it is pretty well configurable, does all i ever needed. However, i never needed to restore any of the full backups, only some files from a few days back. You can mount the backup and browse it, as well as copy files out. I haven't tried the system restore option, i didn't have to. It can image your live system, back up open files using VSS, etc...

+1 for Macrium Reflect. I recently restored a hdd, and worked from the first try. No need to check tutorials, forums or documentation.

I've used Macrium in the past and it was pretty good. Currently using cloud based LiveDrive but I wouldn't recommend them. They don't allow .iso files to be backed up and I've had data loss on 2 occasions caused by their product deleting some of my folders both on the servers and on my PC. I'm moving to another cloud based solution shortly but haven't decided which one yet.

Are there still advantages to tape? I haven't seen one for years. Reliability from the technology being around for a long while I suppose. Can you still buy new tapes?

I don't want to hijack the original post but in 20 years in IT I've never come across tape as a backup. However, I only work with small businesses and home users so that explains why. Both of these groups tend to believe that their hard drive will never fail or they've copied it to a backup device, deleted it off the computer(s) then the backup fails. Had one a couple of months ago I referred to a specialist company. Cost them best part of £1000 to get back 17,000 customer detail info..
