Hi all,
i have a Hard Drive HGST HTS541010A9Z680 5K1000-1000 who doesn't work anymore...

Before that happened, the hard drive warned me that a problem was detected. So I decided to change the disc and clone the patient, but he didn't give me the time. I have no noise, no rotation, no detection. I do not know if it is possible to do something but I have a lot of data that I would like to recover of course ...

Thank you!

Check the 5V TVS diode and fuse(s) near the SATA power connector.

Here is a picture with differents values. 5V seems to be ok :/

Measure the voltages at the two inductors above and below the motor controller IC. They should be Vcore and Vio.

I'm assuming there is absolutely no sound coming from the HDD, otherwise it could be a spindle motor or stiction fault.

Some Hitachi models suffer from NVRAM "corruption" (25FU406C, 8-pin IC). I don't know whether yours is one of these.

There may be an internal fault, eg preamp or heads, which may cause the ROM firmware to fail its POST. I'm not a data recovery professional, so others would be best to advise you.

If you wish to try for a PCB swap, then you would need to transfer the ROM/NVRAM to your donor PCB. Some PCB suppliers include such a service in the price, eg ...

Hello,
i have 2.36V on twice . I don't know if it's correct values or not ?
How can i know if it's a corruption of the NVRAM ? And if i understand, the 25FU406C is the IC that i need to transfer on a new PCB right ? Have it other thing to do ? I have soldering skills and material for doing that.

PCB 200188 220 0A90351 01 5K1000-1000 HTS541010A9E680 PN 0J26213 MLC DA5218 FW 560 --> All ref are identical except 0J26123.. Mine is : 0J26333
Is it ok or not ?
I find a second with this ref :
PCB 200243 220 0A90351 01 0J14451 HTS541010A9E680 H2T1000854S

If one is compatible, i'll buy it and see if PCB is the reason but i'm not sure at all :/
Thank you !
I find on eBay some PCB with the same board reference but with little difference :

The important number on the PCB is OA90351.

There should be two distinct voltages.

Vcore should be around 1.2V or less.

Vio should match the requirements of the "ROM" and SDRAM.

If both voltages really are identical, then this would suggest that there is a short between these two rails within the Marvell MCU.

This model drive usually don't have PCB problems.
If the drive is powered on with your ear against it listening, does it beep?

Both are identical. I'll check if i find something wrong but i'm too newbie to do that by myself i think. Do you have any advice or tips to help me please?
Thank you again.

Nothing, no sound, no spin. I hope this is just the PCB and not inside... I called a specialist for know how it coast to do a backup on white room... the operator : "this is a PCB default, we need to check and repair, change Firmware (?!!) so the amount will be 1200€ ! "
I know business is business but 1200€ for PCB repair?! If i'm right , for replacement , you "just" need to transplate the Bios IC to a new PCB right?
Thank you !

Assuming the phone conversation is as described, 1200 euros for a PCB replacement is pure robbery.
HOWEVER, one must evaluate the drive properly before jumping to conclusions.
Having said that, a) someone must examine the drive so you know what you're having to deal with, and b) the operator you talked to, should have asked you to hand the drive to them for diagnostics before making assumptions about the drive's fault and the cost.
I would suggest you to seek some other Data recovery lab.

You an trust me, i'm not a liar. She asked me for describe the issue so i tell her the drive doesn't work anymore without shock or something other, no spin , no sound. She reply by the 1200€ : PCB fault must replace and change firmware...

I have ordered a PCB , i'll replace the bios chip and hope that'll be ok (not sure if other part is necessary to change ?). Honnestly i don't think PCB is the problem but i keep a really really small hope. I have a Seagate slim 1To with data inside too but need to repair the head -_-
Thank you !

They're crooks. A PCB, including firmware transfer, from hdd-parts.com costs US$50.

That said, the original fault suggests that the drive may have additional head/media problems, so be prepared for that.

Can you perform one last test? Measure the resistance between V1 and V2. If it is 0, then this would confirm the existance of a short within the MCU. Also perform the same voltage checks on your replacement PCB.

Hello,
i have 2.54V on V1 and 0.876 on V2. It's seems to be ok ?
Thank you

Hello,

the measure between V1 and V2 aren't 0. It's .510 so i think it's ok ? It's not necessary to change PCB ?

Thank you :)

Does it sound like stiction (head stuck to platters)?

I'm not sur about it , i just hear 10 "beeps" and nothing after. I'm pretty sure the hard drive isn't spinning.

I put the chipset back on the original pcb to see if the sound was the same and not at all. It makes these ten beeps only with the replacement PCB.
I wonder if it is not necessary to change something else or if the PCB is really compatible knowing that the color is not the same (the origin is light green and the replacement dark).
I am a clerk of the slightest idea, I admit that I block ... Thank you!

Scroll down to the hard drive section:
