Got one of these in.....

Inside the box is a Maxtor 160Gb Calypso.

There are four bad sectors on the drive.

Sector 0 is OK, but sectors 1 & 2 are bad. There are two more bad ones further up the drive. Other than that it seems OK.

So, have made an image to a good drive.

No partition info seems to be there, cannot mount in Windows, Linux, Winhex.

No partitions seen by GDB, Easy Recovery, Recover My Files or UFS explorer Pro (although a scan for partitions in UFS "sees" loads of Snap partitions, all 0Gb in size)

A raw recovery pulls off hundreds of pics (the required data), but EVERY one is only a partial JPG. The first 30% or so of EVERY one is perfect, but the remainder is blank.

Any ideas guys?

TIA

Sean

You said you imaged the drive .. did you create an image file ,
or copy sector by sector to new drive?
I would suggest copying sector by sector to a good 160 gb drive ,
and install it back in the box and see if the embedded os can read
the good drive properly ..
Other than that you might try R-Studio ( on a good drive)
Also try runtime's ntexplorer and search for partition tables..
Many Nas units contain their OS at the beginning of the drive(s)
and then the actually drive data (partition tables ,boot records, ect)
starts much further in the drive than normally would be found .
What little I know about the Snap OS is that it is based on unix .
I would have to actually see the sectors to figure out the actual
filesystem layout .

Hi, thanks for the reply!

I sector imaged the drive with DeepSpar Disk Imager.

I thinkthe box is shot too, it cannot even pick up an IP address.

Trying a RS v4 scan on it now.

Thanks

Sean

there is a free program called angry Ip scanner that may help find the ip address http://www.angryziber.com/old
I used it on the last NAS I recovered

Thanks Steve, but no dice :-(

Latest thing I just tried...

Made image of the bad Maxtor, with no ECC reading of bad sectors, and put aside...

Ran HDDregen on the Maxtor, it says it fixed the bad sectors.

Put it into the Snap Server.

Hard drive started reading like mad, like it was booting up, for about 15-20 mins. Then settled down. I'm guessing it was performing some sort of cleanup?

But still will not obtain an IP address, either DHCP via our router, or via a PC with a crossover cable (limited or no connectivity).

Any other ideas guys?

Cheers

Sean

Try 'UFS Explorer' and scan the disk for lost partitions, it may pick up the disk as a Linux ReiserFS or FreeBSD Volume or something else that it can see it as. It's the only tool i found which could see a snap server formatted disk.

I hope it works in your case.

Thanks for the reply.

I did try that without success.

I ended up buying a new Snap Server and putting the copy of the repaired HDD into it.

Data recovered 100%

But would have been nice to work out how to get the data back by software.

Hi,

We have resolved several times this SNAP Servers.

They have RAID5 by software (LVM)....and they are typically XFS file systems).

This guide (unfortunatelly in spanish) can give you an idea on how to retrieve the data:

http://www.kepler.cl/blog/index.php?itemid=125

You need a linux machine....then follow the commands to reassemble the RAID. (you can force re-assemble)

Hope this can help someone in the future.
