Ok so somehow i locked my hard drive. after doing research but still not being able to solve my problems i have come here for help.

ok so i am using 2 different software's to unlock my western digital drive but none of them seem to be solving my problem (btw im using HDAT2 v4.5.3 and mhdd)

when using mhdd this is what i get

using mhdd i type in the "dispwd" command and it tells me the following
"warning: this Drive is locked by ata password"
"disable password works only when drive has been unlocked"
"what kind of password will you use?"
"for master, type "1". for user, type "0">"

at this point i have tried both master and user but for my purposes ima say i type in "1" for master

then it tells me to "type password max 32sym (empty line for cancel)"

so i type in "wdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwd" (apparently this is the default password)

but then it says fail

now when i use HDAT2 i get the following

under the security menu i see this
"set password" (in red)
"freeze lock" (in red)
"unlock" (in Grey)
"disable password" (in red)
"erase unit" (in Grey)
"unlock device" (in Grey)

if i hit unlock device it says the following
my security status is "enabled/locked/maxium"
"master password revision code = FFFEh: master password is not changed"

i can then set the "identifier" as "user" or "master"
so i set it to master and type in the password "wdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwd"
i also set the "fill char =" to none

then i his set but it tells me "aborted command. press and key..."

i have no idea what it is im doing wrong but any help will be greatly appreciated.
if you have any questions ask them.

How did you lock your drive ? How did the drige got locked in the first place ?
If "default" passwords don't work you will have to pay for a pro to unlock it ...
Is the data inside the drive important for you ?
If you read this forum carefully you will figure out that WD drives can accept a "ATA SPECIFIC VENDOR COMMAND" or "Key" that will allow you to access the firmware and read modules, etc ....
The beauty of it ... it can BYPASS ATA PASSWORD :D :D :D :D :D :D

i was trying to zero the drive but somehow it got locked in the process.
the data on the drive is unimportant

u say "If you read this forum carefully you will figure out that WD drives can accept a "ATA SPECIFIC VENDOR COMMAND" or "Key" that will allow you to access the firmware and read modules, etc ...."
if this is true please point me in the right direction.

o and here is an update i have learned that if the security is set to maximum u cant unlock the drive but u can use atapwd.exe to "erase prepare"then "erase unit" but when i put the password in "wdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwdcwd" or "WDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWDCWD" it says "error: command rejected by drive"

im not sure what the flags all mean but they are as follows
S E L F X V
+ + + - + m

Which utility were you using to zero fill the drive?
If you are lucky there might be a known default password provided by the utility.

I already have solved a similar case : READ THE ENTIRE THREAD CAREFULLY

already-searched-ata-password-woes-laptop-t11188.html

maybe it can help you. Otherwise, the drive *IS* locked because of a firmware issue and there's nothing you can do unless you fix the security subsystem, but if you don't know how to deal with firmware (and have the necessary tools) it is beyond your possibilities... let us know !

Its alright i have solved the problem. it seems the latest version of "hirens boot cd" (ver 9.8) has an updated version off the program called HDDerase. The new program has a security erase option in which it will attempt to unlock a locked hard drive by using a bunch of known passwords. Anyways the process worked and the drive is unlocked and i am using again ^_^.

Go get a Victoria for windows, input the password, select MASTER, select MAX security and press UNLOCK. For the password use the WDC..... try either upper case and lower case. If it doesn't work you have to decide if you need the data inside the drive or the drive itself.
If you care for the data only i might know of a little trick that i can tell you to allow you access to the drive for the time needed to copy the data out of it to another unlocked drive.

Hi,

I'm really interested in the trick to copy out the data.

I'm working with a WD drive which is locked using BIOS. The problem is I'm more into forensics so I need the drive intact. I also got this hex

Code:
AD6F 4C24 375E A213 F1CA 862F

but I cannot transfer it into plain text.
P.S: I also have a PC3k Portable if this tool is of use.

ISTM that forensic principles would preclude you from writing to MOD 02. Instead you would need to send your hex sequence, padded with 20 zero bytes, in answer to a password challenge. Victoria for Windows is one tool that can do this, but you would need to place the hex string in a 32-byte file. There is a thread at The HDD Oracle that shows you how to do this. BTW, I would be surprised if your PC$10K didn't have a way to do this.
