I downloaded mhdd cd-rom ISO, used unetbootin to burn ISO onto usb, and rebooted. My computer did not detect a "boot file," so the usb operation failed. May mhdd be compatible with ISO to USB programs? Great program, but please help.

download zip file http://hddguru.com/download/software/mh ... rchive.zip
extract it.
use HP Formatting Tool to create Bootable USB, then copy the extracted MHDD file to ur USB. it will work

Instead of the download above, i used the "magic boot disk". While in hp formatting tool, I created "dos boot". Download this: http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/ ... Boot-Disk/

Yes, everything worked. Thanks, guy.

cheers,

The Scuzz

hi, why not just make a cd like it was designed to. dont overthink things.

if you really want to make a USB, you need to make a proper DOS boot disk, not just coppy files to it. Command.com is part of the DOS operating system, so you have not created the disc properly. Look here http://malthus.zapto.org/viewforum.php?f=89&sid=b7d4759867d97d83b5682f105e5b86f4 for more options than you can poke a stick at.

Some USBs are harder to use because of partitions for CDrom type partitions etc. Just use an iso and CD. easy.

Hi Haque,

I followed Shahij and Scuzzs advice above. As for DOS it is pretty simple. One can just copy IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS and Command.com to any floppy or USB and that will be bootable.

I need to remove the ATA password from a drive for which I need to hook that up through an USB port. MHDD in its original version does not support attaching a HDD through USB. One requires the USBAPI driver for that and load it from the config.sys to recognise the USB attached HDD. In my case it is recognising the USB attached HDD but since it gives me the "command.com not found error" I am not able to run anything.

Hi Guys,

Nothing seems to work for me for the ATA locked drive. I first tried it with MHDD 4.5 then MHDD 4.6, then Magic Boot Floppy creator, then UBCD 5.x and HDAT2. Tried ZU and ATAPWD as well. But no luck. Can anyone suggest anything else ? It's a Hitachi TravelStar 72106 series HDD.

Thanks in Advance
Anand

Hi, "no luck" isnt going to help find out where your issues are.

are you having trouble running MHDD or are you having trouble making the bootdisk boot the pc? what are you trying to run it on, a laptop? a PC?

"which I need to hook that up through an USB port" - why do you "need" to hook it through a usb port?

Also you cannot just copy DOS files to the disk and they will work. They need to be created properly. for reasons why see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IO.SYS and http://www.allbootdisks.com/disk_contents/dos.html

create the disk properly and retry.

But why not make it easier on yourself, get a pc, put the disk in there with a cd-rom drive, burn the .iso and try that.

This USB nonsense really gets me.

Hi Haque,

Yes "no luck" is not going to find any answers for me. But now I am almost exasperated and almost given up. I have already tried all the combinations. Booting from the USB, Booting from the CD, attaching the rogue HDD to a USB port and attaching it to the primary drive bay etc. (So, I no more boot from USB and no more connecting the HDD through USB). But, one good thing is I am able to "Wipe" the HDD clean (it took some 36 hours in HDAT2 or one other tool). I am wiping it the 2nd time by Prated Magic.

Since now I am booting from a CD, MHDD, HDAT2, Parted Magic at al are working (I am no more getting the "Command.com" not found). And yes, I am using a laptop. But I have taken out the original HDD and put in the rogue HDD into its primary drive.

The only thing that I have not tried is using a PC and attaching the rogue HDD to a IDE cable there. However, I don't think that is going to work out as currently the rogue HDD in the primary bay in the laptop does not work.

Gosh !!! Finally the wipe for a 60GB HDD is over after 77:32:23 hours by Parted Magic. Is there anything slower than this ?

Since it took so long to complete the wiping process, there may be some issues with the drive itself, bad sectors, maybe some firmware issues, a weak head, etc. Check SMART, run some scans and benchmark tests to see if can determine the problem.

This is the procedure I took to make a MHDD HDD:

1. Got a WD 500GB SATA HDD - Connected to computer via USB
2. Deleted the partition
3. I used RMPREPUSBver 2.1.620 (Hirens boot CD) to make the drive bootable (Remenber to make it MSDOS bootable and also select "Boot as HDD" - FAT32
4. Once the process finished I used 7zip to open and extract the archive to the now DOS bootable HDD (make sure to extract the Bootable image under [BOOT] and copy this to the root dir on the HDD.

Plug the drive into your pc and boot it up. At the command prompt, type mhdd and there you go. now you have enough space for all error logs and even to do a sector dump.

Thanks for posting steps, having log file and dump space is a good idea, many people have issues with logging after creating a bootcd. Probably be a lot faster booting than a CD as well.

I think, though not 100%, that the HARD disk you are testing needs to be on Primary port. I saw a post recently during a search that said you could actually test a disk on a secondary by incrementing the disk number by 1. I barely read it as I was looking for something else, and may pertain to IDE only.. but if you have issues, then one thing to check. Sorry for the lack of concrete details!!
