Hi
I have two Seagate 2 TB ST2000DM001
One is already running without any problem have win 7 on it.

On the other, recently bought, i partition it and installed win 7 on my same pc running 1st 2tb hard drive

Then what i done, i booted the pc with my 1st drive and connected the new HD to a SATA to USB converter to see if its works. All 500 GB HD works fine with it but in this larger one, it was showing only 1 partition and was asking for format.

And I did it then came with single partition of 1.81 TB.
Now, when i normally connect that HD to a Mother Board SATA III or II interface it is no longer being detected now :(

My mobo is ASUS so its freeze on its logo screen and nothing is happening.
But its now working with usb. I deleted the partition still not being detected.

Newest firmware cannot being install because it is freeze in the manufacturer logo screen.

Please help me, i did a really big mistake, what should i do?? :( I'm worried.
I want this hard drive to be detect by motherboard.

Just by formating the drive in an SATA to USB convertor shouldn't make the drive undetected in your SATA ports.
Update the BIOS of your motherboard ,
Check with different cables(Power and interface).
connect one drive at a time and check.
Check the drive in a different PC(SATA port).
Try to isolate where the fault is .

I already did what you have told. But still it didn't work.
In the afternoon i've installed win 7 in new one via mobo sata interface
and in the evening after formatting via usb converter it stop detecting.

Same model type older drive is working.
Checked with new sata and power cables but still not working
but if i'm connecting via same usb connector it works.

Tested it in another PC (SATA Port)?
Does it work there or same problem?

My problem is solved.
I again connected that hard drive to usb connector then opened a device manager
there i saw convert to GPT

Image

This was enabled when the drive has no partition. I converted to GPT Disk then shutdown the pc and hooked to the mobo sata interface and viola! It worked! :)

Started the window and went to the device manager again, it asked again for initialize and i selected as MBR.
Repartitioned it and done!

I again tried checking the drive to that usb connector, and again showed as a single partition to format
As I dont wanted to mess up again so i leaved it.

But know why this happens. I am a experienced guy but not too much technically expert.
May any expert tell about this. There is also no information on google about this.

Good , you found your way out.

You can only boot from a GPT disk if you have a operating system that supports booting to GPT(Windows 7 ,XP-64, Server 2003/2008, Vista ) and your motherboard has an enabled UEFI BIOS.

But should it cause the drive to not detect and hang your pc on post as you said ?
"My mobo is ASUS so its freeze on its logo screen and nothing is happening."

If you have the time , check for an updated BIOS , if available ,for your motherboard and try.

Actually it does .
According to this , GPT partitioned disk does cause the system to hang/slow down at POST.

something learned new .

No i was running at MBR before & after formatting via usb converter.
It was single partition when formatted. Then i hook to the motherboard sata_1, my 1st Hard Drive had win7 OS at MBR connected to SATA_0, and when i turned ON the PC it hanged. I leaved it for five minutes still it was hanged and hard drive light on cabinet was also not glowing.
I unplugged my 1st Drive then also freeze.

Then booted a pc with my 1st HD. To check if its now working via usb or not. And yes it was working, i deleted the partition. Now hard drive become fully unpartitioned. No luck then also.

I tried to install firmware via bootable cd, but if motherboard doesn't leave the first screen, then how it would come to the boot.

Then i understand that i just only have a hope to do something in a device manager to fix this bug using that usb converter.
So, what i did when i saw convert to GPT Disk, i thought lets try this thing, may it fix it. And thats what happened, then when i connected to sata, my pc booted up. When i went to device manager, it recognized as a new hard drive asking in a new dialog box if i want MBR or GPT.

Look, it converted to GPT using usb, but in actual motherboard didn't accept as a GPT. It accepted as a new drive, which is not both GPT or MBR.

I know this GPT is a different thing, it allowed us to have more than 4 partitions, it haven't made for fixing bugs. But it worked for me like that.

I dont know if may i've experienced this problem because of UEFI bios. Can't say! I always use Intel Mobo's have 3 of them, but this time i give a try to this new motherboard ASUS P8B75-M LX.

Anyway, i not gonna format my 2tb with that usb again but it works fine with 500 GB or less hard drive, not tested 1TB or 1.5, because i dont have.

Expert says that, update your bios only if u really have any problem with that. And i dont have any problem yet.

Hey, Are you using GPT? I think if drive converted to GPT, will it work as slave with non-uefi motherboards??

and do u have any information to how to reset the SMART of seagate 7200.9??
I've TTL Adapter and everything, but couldn't seems to find reset commands.

You are facing an exactly opposite situation.
But as you started with MBR at the beginning , and had no problem then, why should MBR partition freeze your system now?
If you don't have any data in that drive, erase everything(GPT/MBR), and start afresh.
You can use MHDD , from this forum's file section for that purpose.
You don't have to erase the whole drive, you can stop at 1%, all the partition information will be erased.
Now partition the drive as new (MBR) and check.
Do it If you have the time and curious enough.

I've already done that.
Actually that usb is buggy. Hard drives have a reserved sectors that server for mbr partition information or gpt information.
When formatted with usb, i think that area has been cleaned and made unreadable by the bios. When converted to gpt, i made it readable by the bios again.
You know China has reached every corner of this world. This usb is china made (which has no guarantee) and i guess have conflict in supporting larger drives. Because i've seen on the internet while researching that some usb's easily supports larger drives and this didn't.

I want to thank you for giving your time. You are the only one who replied to this thread.
Thanks for your support!

Also want to thank those who given their time to read my problem but cannot offer any help.

I think you would have got more replies if your question had something to do with data recovery which it didnt.
This is a data recovery forum not a pc repair forum
