It's a TVS.

Like I said, remove it ;-)

Hi Gurus,
I'm a complete newbie at this but it would certainly appear that 'hiro' and I have a similar problem. Mine is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10, 320GB HD but I've got a similar component burnt out (I think). So what is a TVS and how do I remove it? Also, what is the likely cause of it burning in the first place and what will happen to the board if the fault occurs again without this 'TVS' in place? Like I said, I'm a newbie :? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hi, the TSV is a transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode and it take care of any peaks in the current.
And by removeing it you're be able to get your drive running and get your data back (for the short time) If you want the drive to operate longer you're advised to replace it with a new one to protect the other components from another peak.
Notice that the peaks can come from a bad or faulty PSU, so always buy quallity, before quantity

Regards/ Bosse

mr_spokk, I have a similar problem. Can I take the drive to an electronics repair place and simply have them remove the TVS diode? Will that enable the drive to spin up? If not, do you know someone I can send the drive to, to have it repaired?

Marty

Why are three different threads required for one problem?

Just remove the bloody thing!

It will usually work, if it doesn't work straight away then turn it off quickly, there is further damage.

Once you have the data, then throw the drive away.

Guys I also have a problem with my Hdd which also died. My hard disk keeps trying to spin the hd at fixed time intervals. Then after 10-15 tries stops trying. This is the same routine everytime I start it. I also have a damaged/burnt part on my hard disk and I have attached the picture. My damaged part is number 2. What do you think gurus?

That's a coil likely used for a DC-DC converter. They rarely go bad on their own. I tend to think there's other problems.

hello! I guess i have the same component burnt on my sata Seagate 7200.9 ST380211AS.

It has the same manufacturer's logo on it
the letters on it:
QE
R617

is it the same thing as QE R610?
I tried to search ON semiconductor website for those letters but with no success. how can I find what part is that?

on the attached foto is that component being unsoldered. I just put it on the place where it should be.

Are you trying to return the drive to service?

rchadwick,
no, i'm fixing it by myself. I got that thing burnt on one of my hard drives and I just took it from the similar working HD I had. So now I'm trying to figure out what part is that and where i can get it

You misunderstood. Are you trying to recover data off the drive, or just use the drive?
