Hello,

I have a WD800 - Western Digital 80GB drive that has started to be recognized as a WDC ROM MODEL UNICORN 6.2GB drive. The drive does spin and make a click sound but does not get recognized as a usable drive. It used to be a primary drive, that I have since moved to a an external USB drive to try and recover the data.

I have read through the forum looking for similar issues. Is this a firmware issue or is the drive totally gone?

I am new to the forum and any ideas would be appreciated. I have tried some RAW Data Recovery programs unsuccessfully.

After it clicks, does it spin down, or keep clicking?

It spins for about 10 seconds while it clicks then stops.

I recently had a WD400BD and was able to use PC-3000 PCi to back up the drive and then to rewrtie the translator after that I was able to detect the drive correctly then clone and all of the users data was recoverable. Look for my post and you will see the report and other forum users suggestions it might help good luck...

If it clicks and spins down then it's usually heads.

But could possibly be PCB.

Thanks for your comments. I don't have PC3000, but I will read up on it. Do I just need the software or the entire PC3000 kit?

I have replaced the PCB with an identical, WD800 drive, and the results were the same. Is there any other way to check if the heads are bad?

Hi Spoiler,

PC3000 is hardware and software.
You cannot get them seperately.

Best regards,

Dobre
