Hello all,

About a few weeks or so ago the family computer died, I wasn't home at the time but apparently there was smoke coming out of it upon start-up, from what I could tell there was a power surge as there was so many things plugged in the one multi-socket it was bound to happen (the PSU, and even some of the peripherals stopped working when plugged into other computers). For a while I also noticed the computer used to make whiny noises and weird noises upon start-up as well.

Anyway the hard drive doesn't spin up and I noticed the burn marks in the following pictures. I don't have a lot of knowledge on this, just what I've read on various forums, I'm guessing with the burn marks I should replace the PCB first and see if that helps at all? There is a lot of data on there related to my mum's work which she hasn't backed up for some time (most of the other data has been backed up though) but I don't think data recovery is a viable option.

As for firmware etc I think the second picture has all that information however it is a bit hard to read so:

DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB ATA/133 HDD
Code: YAR41BW0
Model: 6Y160P0042241
SN:Y43N7EE
Main Chip #: 040111300

I also found a PCB which I think is compatible, seen at this link:

Has anyone used this site before?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I don't have a lot of knowledge in this area, thanks in advance!

That PCB should be fine, and that website is well known to be OK.

Good luck!

There is some missing information, so this is not 100% surely matching with your drive!
Including the side have not given the needed information about the pre-programmed loader's version (bootstrap code), or drive assembly code...
I think you have about 65% for match what you need.

But.....
There is one additional note:
This model is really sensitive for power surges, and usually the preamp chip is burning together inside the HDA with the VCD chip on your photo.
In this case re-powering with alternative PCB can be dangerous for the data!
I have faced some times this situation when the data are demagnetized on radial lines by the owner who replaced the PCB.

By the other hand, this drive is pretty old, and simple.
Any decent company should give to you low price for this case after SAFE diagnose.

If you can't find one near you, i can help too.
PM me if you are interested.

Good luck,
Janos
