Hi,

I have a 250GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.8, ST3250823ACE.

When I plugin to Serial Terminal and tried to do any serial diag commands, it displays

[xx] - Serial Port Disabled.

XX seems like the ASCII code of whatever key I press. I cannot execute any serial interface commands.

Does anybody knows how to resolve this? How to enable Serial Terminal access again?

Thanks in advance.
Strauss

Hi Rameez,

Thanks for your reply. I thought it was PCB problem also, until I found 2 more drives from my good stocks that has the same characteristics. These 2 are good drives, but cannot access the Serial Terminal too... same errors....

Any idea of a SG series that Serial terminal may have been disabled by the factory?

The model and drive info in the label is:
Barracuda 7200.8
ST3250823ACE
P/N: 9AG283-260
FW: 8.01
Site Code: AMK

All three drives have the same info, the original defective drive and the 2 new good drives.

Cheers,
Strauss

Or maybe just defaulting to ATA terminal instead of serial? Try getting the drives to start in safe mode or F> prompt?

I still cannot hack this.... during power ON, the serial terminal seems to send some data to COM port and displays the default info of the drive.

but when I press any key, even just the '.' or the ';' it displays " (xx) - Serial Port Disabled".

Anyone who has encountered the same problem and has an idea to resolve it? Am suspecting that there could be an ATA vendor command to enable serial diag commands, or pins/jumpers to short in the PCB for thise model?

One interesting Finding today, same 250GB model ST3250823ACE, only with different label in the drive DB35.1 Consumer Storage has normal Serial Term access :

1) With Serial Port Disabled ERROR
( have found 7 identical drives already with the same characteristic, 5 of them are good drives though, so PCB problem may not be an issue)
[LABEL in the DRIVE]
Barracuda 7200.8
250 Gbytes
Model: ST3250823ACE
P/N: 9AG283-260
Firmware: 8.01

2) No Problem, normal Serial Term Access
[LABEL in the DRIVE]
DB35.1 Consumer Storage
250 Gbytes
Model: ST3250823ACE
P/N: 9AG283-260
Firmware: 8.01

Anything that I am missing here?

Hi,
check the PCB with terminal disabled for extra resistors near the controller.

Hi Pepe,

Thanks for the reply.

I have checked every component on two PCBs (the disabled serial and the working one), the only difference I can visually see is the Buffer RAM chip (is it? the one in the leftmost)

For the disabled, it is a Hynix chip (HY57V641620HG), the working one is Samsung ( K4S641632H).

Am I running on a special drive series here? Have worked with SG drives since the old silver 4.3gb and this is the first time I am not able to get into the serial diag cmds.

Cheers,
Strauss
