will try it again with the correct numbers,,
Have been using this drive for backup and suddenly it fails to operate,no motor noise, nothing, when I monitor the 5 volt input the current is 115 ma and never changes, I have another drive with identical looking board but it is 60 gb instead of the 30 gb capacity of my bad one, can I swap boards and get the motor operating again? (the good one draws up to 650 ma and settles around 160 ma idle current.)
I have a semi clean work area and have been repairing gps receivers for the last 14 years so I am familiar with surface mount tactics and esd safety. drive is MHT2030 AT that does not work,, working drive is MHT2060 AT

It might work if u swap the ROM (40pin TSOP) provided that the source of the problem is on the pcb...

Maybe the heads are stuck on the platters. Put the drive to your ear or use a stethoscope when you first power it on, and see if you hear any noise at all. If you do, it may not be the PCB . . .

I have listened carefully to drive while powering up and only a very faint click is heard, the meter on my bench power supply goes to 115 ma and does not move from there, would a stuck slider not cause more current?
I think I will try the board swap but need to know exactly which rom chip needs replacement.

Hey Jono-art,

I had the same drive and same problem like Skybill and it was the h3 stuck to the platter.

Skybill, You might want to send it in to the data recovry place near you!!! It might be chap now but for sure it will be a pricy one after you cause any additional damages...

I have swapped board from the good 60 gb drive and I now hear motor running,, the original board has a problem,, suspect power surge ,, If I can swap the correct chip I can likely recover the data but I need to know which chip..
here is an image of the board,, I can not see any 20 pin chips..

I said TSOP 40 ;)
anyway, google is your friend finding datasheets. Some of the ICs U won't find the datasheet, but for the ROM, surely.

Sorry Pepe,, Guess I should use my reading glasses,
I WILL be using them to replace the IC...
There is only one 40 pin chip on the board,,
that should simplify things,
I will have a go at replacing it..
as stated,, this is a learning experience

Does anyone know if a test-clip exists for a tsop40?
