I have a Lacie NAS Big Disk 1TB unit, with 2 500GB drives inside. It has refused to powerup, and although Lacie has sent me a replacement power-brick I still can't get any response from the unit. Lacie wants me to send them the unit, but I will probably get a refurb back without my data. I want to get some of the data off it, and I'd rather void the warranty and get the data by opening up the unit.

I've thought about purchasing an identical unit and swaping the drives, but that would cost $250+ and void the warranty on both units. If there is any hope in recovering from the drives in this unit, I want to give it a shot. I am pretty positive the drives are fine, but the power to the board is shot.

I am told that inside is 2 500GB drives in a RAID-0 array in a Linux OS. How can I rebuild this array with a Windows-based (XP) PC? Is there hope?

I've contacted some data-recovery folks, and they all want $400-$3000 to recover the data. Way more than I can spend.

Thanks for any help.

-John
