Sorry, but the spindle is seized, and there's nothing you can do but send it to a pro.

what do you mean by cheap?

I think you are looking at least £600 - £1200 for one of the few labs which can recover from this.

Stupid Question. A question which is repeated on a daily basis throughout the DR World.

Why does a brain surgeon demand a salary of £100000 - £500000 per year when a scalpel is only £1 to buy?

Your paying for skills and expertise not tools and parts.

well, sory but is not a stupid question.
In fact I am a maxilofacial surgeon and when I provide dental implants to someone just to give an example and if something goes wrong with the crown work or if the crown work fails for any reason the new estimate is NEVER more expensive than the implant itself...

So, if you find the question stupid I'm sorry
I can understand that due to the technical work this kind of repair can be expensive, even more expensive than the original product, but to charge around 10x more than the original product its not a good thing...

Anyway as I have thousands of cases inside I really need to recover them.
Any suggestion about a good and confidential lab to use it? Money is no longer a problem, I need to recover those files in a safe and confidential way. Patient's confidentiality is at first.

cheers

It is understandable to have such a view, but understand that hard drives are designed for a consumer environment, and competition has driven prices down. This does not make hard drives any less complex. There are three major factors that drive data recovery prices up:

1) Hard drives are much more complex then people think

2) While there is a school to become a surgeon, or a lawyer, there is no school in existence for data recovery. Some may offer short courses that give you a "push start", but from then on it is all about doing your own research and development with your own funds, and teaching yourself. Some failures can take literally thousands of working hours to discover a remedy for.

3) Proprietary equipment is not cheap. While there are commercial solutions that cost even greater then $10000 USD, there is also equipment that technicians design and develop in house, using their own funds to create prototypes and fabrications. Alot of money is burned creating new tools that give the technician the ability to perform fixes on drives such as yours. (The platters have to be moved, and you cant just take them out one by one, or grab them all with your hand. It is much more advanced then this)

I hope this gives you some understanding of why recovery prices for these types failures are high priced.

Regards,

If data recovery was cheap and easy, the manufacturers themselves would be doing it. There is a reason why they don't. I always hear "well the hard drive only cost $100". All I can say is, if I had a million dollars locked up in a $100 dollar safe that I couldn't get open, then I'd spend whatever I had to in order to gain access to it.

Thanks for the recommendation, but my quote for be at least £500 (absolute minimum) as this is a very difficult case, so I think it would be a waste of time for the OP to contact me.

Sorry if this sounds harsh, but these drives are pigs.

"Proprietary equipment is not cheap."

Can you provide us a list of vendors ? I'm sure when they sell their products they will provide some sort support .
How hard can it be I've edited major movies .

SUPPORT doesn't mean they do the job for you. In any case you can buy a Bahco or Crescent or Cooper Tools wrench key set (major quality tool manufacturer) but with it you cannot repair a Ferrari or a BMW. And then , are you going to ask Cooper Tools support or BMW or Ferrari how to DIY ?
How hard can it be I've fixed and recovered data from countless drives ...

O tempora, o mores...

Yes, Hilti and Black & Decker too. If not available, you can get a no brand hatchet. For sure, it is a universal tool that makes every HDD stop clicking.

[sorry, couldn't resist]

Jim,

Off the shelf tools & the provided support are of great help but are not definitive solution.

You say you have done major movie editing but wtf does that mean?

In movie editing peeps here don't have a clue....but with data recovery that is a very different story.

Now I ask you about the major movie editing business.........what is more important......the editor or his tools?

In the editing business can the tools do the job without the editor?
You see in the data recovery business the pro recovery technican can often do the job without the pro tools or support.
A pro or better said a Guru would design his own tools.
