Dear Guru,

After browsing a lot of website, I found yours. It seems that it is possible to recover the data from a MAXTOR 6E040LO / N40P.

The HD that I have make a normal noice but is no longer recognized in the bios by its normal designation but recognized as N40P.

Looks a known Maxtor G-List issue, right?

What are the necessary tools to recover?

Is it feasible without buying special HW ?

1. not sure, this can be any type of FW damage.
2. special HW/SW complex.
There are some really dangerous sw wich can manipulate the SA on this drive, but most of the time can made only more problems... (caused by bugs and miss-use)
3. in short: no. (see #2)

Knowlegde and time is OK for me. I only need to know which tool is needed (for free).
First things first: What is needed to boot my PC with the HD and diagnose the issue ? (retrieve the SMART numbers ?)

Send it to dobrevjester he is an professional engineer on this field and its on Beligum too, if u tried to DIY, u could damaged SA tracks, and make worst if u are using pirate products, u need a people with experience some times over this families u could get media problems, and if u tried to repair sa modules, could endless with more damaged to another modules, because G list and another modules are linked to another modules, so if u tried to DIY u know the consequences.

Damaging the SA tracks isnt really a problem for me as it's not my HDD, but learning on how to fix that IS great.

BTW, I managed to grab some LBR files on a russian website. Would that be helpful ? or you still advice me to pay someone to do it .

I can fix a hard drive, but I can't fix an a gearbox - it's a speciality - that's why it costs money to recover data from a hard drive. If it was easy, everybody would do it.

It has been well explained to you that you cannot do this yourself, it is not a DIY'able job. You need software + hardware to do it. The LDR files are as useless as a pair of tits on a chicken without knowing what to do with them.

Given that it is somebody elses data, this should be even more reason for you not to screw with it. If it was my hard drive, I wouldn't be happy that you are trying to fuck with it. Read the sticky posts about DIY on this forum.

Otherwise, if people like me, needs to have a special PC3000 HW to diagnose an issue, just restrict the access to this forum to the proud owners of that device....

You may not realise it yet, but we are helping you by telling you not to try this yourself.

You will realise that this is not a router, it can't simply be "flashed" or reset. You have one chance to recover the data off the drive.

Help is not always the answer you want to hear.

Indeed you are right, and the knowledge of professionals is being passed to you. That knowledge has seen many many DIY efforts over many years, and this knowledge is telling you that you need assistance from somebody with the right skills.



What do you expect here? A free solution to a problem that requires specialist equipment and skills?

I'm sorry to be blunt, but this problem does not have a free solution.
