Hello everyone,

I got a WD2500JS-00MHB0 with a burned PCB (see photos). Not sure how my friend managed that! :)
The disk doesn't sound like it spins or the heads to move.

Do you think it is still recoverable or will this type of damages damage the head's pre-amps?
Will it need the ROM swapped too?
Does anyone offer this PCB for Greece otherwise how can I (if?) choose the correct donor?

Some hints please...

Thank you very much

You can buy a donor board on EBAY. You will have to move the 8-pin chip at U12 to the new board. I had the same problem, and it got my drive to spin up.

You have very high chance of success replacing PCB and ROM chip.

...and a big chance that preamp is toast, so I would recommend checking it...

That is a nasty one, what a mess!

+1 The preamp is likely to be shot but you won't know until you try.

Yes what a nasty surge. By the looks of that PCB it has both the sata and 4 pin molex power connectors. I'm taking a guess your friend might have plugged in both at the same time.

Seen one with more damage - preamp was fine. Yesterday got one with barely any damage - preamp was gone , had to swap heads. Luck of the draw m8, but i think ull be fine.

Make sure ur U12 survives the transportation to the new board. Or it wil become a pain.
Good luck.

thanks guys... ordering new board. The cheapest solution yet ;)
I'm getting a pro to do the desoldering as I am confident but not enough to take the risk :)

Thanks again!
