After upgrading the my single Seagate GoFlex Net device http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/network_storage/file-sharing/ I experienced loss of folders on the drive.

My shared folder containing quite a substantial number of sub folders, now after the upgrade, only shows a few of them when browsing though Windows Explorer. The exact same folders are also appearing in the device web interface in the "Share"-section.

As it seams only the first 92 folders are showing up and these are not random since they are the first folders in alphabetical order - the other folders are not appearing even though the data is there.

By accident I discovered that the data was still there since a piece of software (XBMC) on my computer indexed the sub folders and though XBMC I can still access the disappeared folders.

Example: If I want to access the "zzz" folder I can access it though the explorer by writing:

\\GOFLEX_HOME\GoFlex Home Public\shared_folder_name\zzz even though it is not showing in explorer.

I have tried reseting the firmware with a USB stick without success...

Could there be some problems with th HDD index?
Is there a diagnostic tool to run a chkdsk remotely on a NAS?

I have tried removing the Hard drive case from the Pogo stand and tried attaching a SATA cable-to-USB in order to try getting direct access to the driver without success.

Personally I suspect something gone wrong with the firmware update or and it screwed up sharing/user rights on these folders since the data is still indicating to be on the disk.

Because of the bits of info you supplied, I suggest you investigate Seagate's forums & support for this NAS - it does not look like a disk drive problem.


You don't explain exactly what procedure you tried, but since the filesystem on the disk is unlikely to be one which Windows could use directly, then I'm not surprised.


Agreed, based on what you have said, this is very, very, very unlikely to be a hard disk problem.

You could experiment by renaming a folder such that it moves up the order alphabetically (eg ZZZ_original_folder_name), or you could try setting the hidden attribute for a particular folder, or you could create a new folder named AAA_original_folder_name. This won't solve your problem, but it may help confirm your diagnosis.

You could also examine the effect of sorting by name or extension or date/time, both in Explorer and in the Web interface.
