Hey all!

I have this problem, does anyone have its solution.
"This drive contains one or more back-up copies of the file allocation table (FAT). The copies should be identicle but aren't."

I choose the selection to "Repair the error"

Then scandisk continues its check and finishes saying that "Scandisk found errors on the drive and fixed them all."

However, if I run scandisk again it still has the same error. I've tried both standard mode and thorough mode, but again it still comes up with the same error.

So, what does this problem mean and, most importantly, how do I fix it?

Is this your drive or from a customer?

Is it an external or internal drive?

What events happened immediately before scandisk first reported a problem?

Have you checked the Windows event log for any errors which are being logged, at the date/time when scandisk is run?

Have you cloned the drive already?

Are you aware that running scandisk can cause loss of normal access to one or more files, requiring logical data recovery?

I would copy the FATs to separate BIN files (on another drive), and then compare them. To this end, could we see the partition table and boot sector with Microsoft's Sector Inspector?

Extract the above archive to the one folder and execute the SIrun.bat file. The procedure will generate a report file named SIout.txt.

@fzabkar - Nice plan. I was going to suggest that the OP compared the FATs, but decided to start by asking some "baby steps" questions instead, due to the missing context for the current situation. Perhaps I aimed too low.

Abid, Sector Inspector doesn't appear to run on a Win9x box. Is that your problem?

Otherwise it appears that you are dumping the SIrun.bat file rather than running it. Try changing the name to SIrun.cmd, or choose Open from the r-click context menu in Explorer.

Alternatively, you can use a disc editor such as HxD to examine sectors 0 and 63.

BTW, if the data are of no value, then why don't you just reformat the drive?

Why "of course"? You didn't say this at the beginning...


That's a pity for you, since having the history often makes troubleshooting more efficient (especially when trying to assist someone remotely, like you are now requesting here).

I have seen this scandisk behaviour before, but since you didn't answer any of my other questions, then further help from me is impossible.
