Hi

Is it possible to have a program that can see the free space of the previous partition layout and create a new partition over that free space which is now unallocated.

What happened:
cause, my 2tb full of apps, movies and tv series, was on the hdd and it was a GPT style format, because of this windows could not install on it and i was fiddling around in cmd(in windows setup) and in diskpart i accidently chose to clean the wrong disk, therefore windows wiped (i think) the first sector to "0" but the remaining data was intact and without any other way i had to make a 20 GB partition over the the "cleaned" disk and installed windows.

Why?
Im asking about the free space because i cannot backup the data anywhere else(full backup, 1.5TB HDD nearly full) so is it possible to do something like that, so i can recover the data in the previous data into the partition that has now been created over the free space of the previous partition.

I don't fully understand your config - you mention a full backup, but it's not clear whether this is from the 2TB disk or something else, and much of the rest of the description isn't clear enough for me to be sure of the details. So I'll just give 2 short comments:

a) if the data is important to you, then before you make any more understandable human errors, spend the money on at least one (if not two) new disks, large enough to hold the whole of whichever disk (the 2TB one?) you'll be working on. Then clone the whole of your existing disk onto one of the new ones, before you do anything more, as a backup.

b) free space in a filesystem is not usually in one contiguous area, so you can't expect to create a partition in that free space (at least, not without doing extra work first).

It seems to me that you're trying to jump through difficult & risky "hoops", just to avoid buying another disk. I wouldn't be following a plan like that, if the data on a disk had any value to me...

P.S. - Just to clarify: The short answer to your question is that you might be talking about using programs like Partition Magic etc. - that's the "extra work" I mentioned. However this type of program sometimes does not run successfully (hence you need to backup first), and they need to have a correct partition table and non-corrupt filesystem at the start, to then defragment and shrink. Your description of your situation doesn't seem to fit with those requirements.

Also, as I mentioned before, your config is unclear to me e.g. you say that the 2TB drive is "full" and you also say that the 1.5TB is "nearly full", yet you seem to be talking about having free space in a filesystem on one of those disks?! It seems like you're missing available space (e.g. new disks) to hold a backup and to hold the recovered data...

Perhaps other board members wil understand your situation better or differently to me. :) Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Hi

Sorry if it sounded vague, i meant to say that the 2TB is nearly full (couple of 100 GIGS) so you recommend getting another HDD, ok thanks, basically that is my only option
