Hello all.

I have both today a DS411j, to use whit my 4 disks.

My goal was to use all of the disk in jbdo mode, as it was before on a a8n-sli mobo.

I dint know that the ds411j firmware upgrade to the most recent, formated automaticly the disks (!!!???).

So, when i saw what the firmware was doing, i just unpluged the drive..
But unforntaly, it was to late.. The dsm was not yet writen on the disks, but the partition layout was already altered, so my data was gone.

Most of it is not realy importand, just the bandwitch wat i lose to get it back..
The rest, some txt, pdfs, and documentsthat i got from my work i dont get back. I had there also for me importand, a huge music collection, whit some rare music on it, and ofcourse my pictures.

Now i have offerd one disk to be formated, (mostly hd movies and stuff) so i have some room to get the data back. My question is, what is the best progam to use to get my data back?

I only care about the music collection (about 600 gb) the photo collection, about 50 gb and some documents (whatever, txt, pdf, wordt, exel, ect ect ect) also somting about 10 gb.

I have here some tools, but before i run them, i whant to know what to use and what not...
the tools i have:

partition find and mount, (will find the partion table and remount them)
R-disk data recovery (but this is for ntfs and fat, i have all in ext3 or 4 filesystem)
and i have mhdd.

Whit one do you recomend?

Hi,

Using those those tools you'll probably be able to get the data in RAW (if the drives where in JDOB), but probably you won't get file and folder structure.
Anyway, if your data is valuable don't use any app that writes anything to the drives, as that way in last case you can still go to a pro.

I'm from Portugal, so if you need any specialized help, let me know.

thx for your help.
Yes the disks where setup as jbdo.
the raw data hem??
well, i read a bit more on recovering ext3 filesystem structures after a format or new file system.
It seems that i can try out a bit testdisk and its companion (forgot the name, but it comes whit the .deb).

So, i give that a try. As i said, the other stuff is not realy important, (movies and stuff) the important stuff is the music, documents/presentation and the pictures.

I gona try the testdisk on one of my disks, then i go for the other disks..
all the disks have only be formated once or twice, from ntfs to ext3, so it sud not be that hard.
i keep you informed whit my progress.

workplan i have:

whit a other computer, put there the disk whit problems, boot from a pen whit ubuntu, install testdisk, do some tests and see if i can get the partition back. from there on, i can write the moost important data to other disks over the network.
If i dont have sucess whit that, then i contact you.

laterz!!

hmm.. cant find the edit button :P

it seems that i can salvage most of the data whit photorec.
A nice little tool that comes whit testdisk.
Where testdisk trys to rebuild the partitiontable, and correct it, photorec does a complete scan and ignores the partitiontables.

So, whit this information, i going to do the following:

wait until one disk that i have on the ds411j is up and ready (also configured ect).
Run photorec. it makes a image and dumps it somewhere. so, the disk needs to be 1 tb to fit.
Format the recovered drive on the ds411j... And so on. long, slow process, but i think that i can salvage most of the importand and non important data :P

thx for the input.
