I have a seagate HDD 40 GB , that had a damaged head.

I want to replace the head with a compatible one.

How should I find which head is compatible with my HDD.

I mean which numbers should I look for. ?

I already tried replacing a HDD with same model number but that didn't work out.

Something to do with made in or the hda number or partnumber or something else ??

Can someone tell me an exact way of finding which heads could be compatible ?

Thanks

Compatibility is only half the problem.

Do you have any idea of the potential recovery complications even if successful?

Do you have any idea of the potential risks attempting to do this without the required experience, tools or skillset?

Do you know how easy it is to incorrectly diagnose a failed HDD? You are sure your head is damaged?

Can you get terminal report, or give more info about the problem?

Yes I am sure there is a problem with the head.
And I also understand the potential risks involved.
I had a dummy HDD of my friend which I opened and again packed it back , removing head and everything. And its still working. So I think I can try with my own HDD too.

I just want to get back the data.
So even if it works properly for an hour it would be fine.
Data recovery seems so expensive that I can't afford it. So I thought I can try on my own , at the most i'll loose both the HDD.
I know the room must be very clean ,
the head should not be touched by anything
the magnets must be kept away from the disk , esp being careful while removing the head.

It is expensive because contrary to belief it is actually VERY complicated.

Your dummy drive you made practice on, guess was perfectly working with no hidden problems? You used no donor so compatibility was not an issue for it. The dummy drive has no data on ( I assume) so you did not need to attempt to actually recover it?

If you decide to try DIY (which I dont recommend) then good luck and make sure you write here the results...

Yes the dummy HDD still writes reads perfectly.. Seems no problem I used it for two hours after I operated on it.
The dummy HDD had data and I was able to read it even after I removed and then again placed the head back.

DIY means ?? sorry if the question is dumb..

Also another help , for compatibility of board what all should be checked ? just the model number or the firmware and p/n and all those numbers.

I finally found a board matching with my configuration level.
Is there anything using which I can change the firmware , cause that is what is different in those two . ?
