Hello, my Samsung HD 403LJ just broke down and I was hoping that I can get some help on this forum.
The drive no longer receives power. I measured the voltage from the SATA power supply connection just before the 2 components circled in red there is power there but after the components there is no power.
Also the ends at the motor when measured show 0.3 volts.

I also measured a working Samsung 320 GB Hard Drive. The voltages at the motor show to be 6 volts.

I need to know what are the components circled in red and if the drive can run without them.





The other two black components circled in red have the following written on them:

The upper one has a revers C and some sort of double ii 814 HE or LE I cannot tell if it is a H or a L due to a small crack on it

The lower one has 818 L E and again the same revers C and ii


Also the PCB is:
BF41-00133A for HD403LJ

Main Chip: 8816725S-TFJ1 YPM14843 0806 B0P TW

Measure the resistance of the 2 bigger components circled in red on the right side. What do they read?

the botom one starts from 670 and goes down to 650

the top one is 005 and the multimeter beeps.

I selected the diode measurement on the multimeter.

I think its a zener diode

so perhaps that one is blown ? will the hard drive run if i remove it and just sodder a wire in its place ?

Make a search for TVS and you'll get the information needed.

also I forgot to say. I have current on the side with the 125F 16V side, but no current on the side after the 000 component.

Any ideea why is that ?

One which beeps is blown TVS (Transient Voltage Supressor). Very similar to Zener diode, but different purpose. Unsolder it, check drive is working. In the long run you need to replace it with similiar type.

Also i think that the 000 fuse is blown as well because I dont have any current after it. So do I need to solder a wire in place of the 000 fuse and the diode ?

I tried this once and it did not work. the pc wouldn't power on.

Unsolder TVS first. Then check 000 resistor, multimeter should beep.

the value of the 000 fuse is 1358 ohmi

also like I said before i have no current after it there should be 5 volts there but there are none.

if i just use a simple wire in its place the pc will not start the PSU wont let it

This is because you didn't unsolder TVS!

After reading your post im replying to say thanks to forum members and to give you a solution.
I had a problem same as you just yesterday, with same HDD model.
I connected the hdd to an outside power source and it smoked from the top TVS.
I checked the components and noticed that : fuse was broken as well as the TVS.

Solution:

TVS circuit must be open!
Fuse circuit must be closed! (soldered a wire down or just using plain solder can solve that)

My HDD is fully working in spite of future problems to come. It will serve now as a backup HDD and not a 100% PC HDD has i read somewhere it can melt or catch fire because of the pieces i removed protect it against overvoltage.

More likely electronics will just stop working, as there is no spike protection anymore. Better find TVS replacement. If drive won't fail in the first 2-6 month, you can return it to the normal use.

I am indeed looking forward for my hdd repair. I cant read que components code but found out a high-res image which gives me the codes for the TVS component but im having a hard time finding a seller online.

The one marked with arrow and similiar size little bit down are TVS's. One for 12V, one for 5V power line. You have to remove faulty TVS before going the next step!

Both TVS's are serial with fuse. The botton one is marked '0'. Checking procedure identical as above. The fuse on the top (green) marked "125F 16V" is resettable fuse - called polyswitch. Check continuity like normal fuse. If 0 Ohm, must take another step and test voltage drop when drive is powered on. It shouldn't be higher than 0.1V.
