Removed from a 2TB Seagate enclosure after client bought it in with a broken USB3 connector. Won't spin up; when plugged in to an external dock it causes the dock light to weakly flash constantly and there's no spin up, so I'm *assuming* it's current overload [ the dock light normally says on constant, it's not an activity-indicator light ]. I removed the PCB from the HDD and tried that on its own with the same fault.

While the client says it's not been dropped, I imagine it's taken some sort of physical impact to knock off the USB connector.

The components are getting smaller and few these days. I suggest the usual diode test. But I'm not sure as this is the problem because any short would blow the fuses and your docking station would do nothing on the LED display.

Components aren't too bad, worst there are a couple of 0402 units, but at least there's no 0201 or 01005 ( like I have to contend with on iPhones *ugh* ).

I might fire up the old LOM and see if I can't track back to where the potential short is coming from ( assuming it's a simple short :\ ).

Just did some testing; the 12V TVS (assumed) is blown through, as I get a short form 12V->GND ( both sides of the TVS ), but not when I go 5V->GND.

Now to find a replacement.... plenty of dead drives here, I'm sure I can snare a few ( I surprisingly don't have any TVS diodes in my collection of parts ).

SUCCESS - was the 12V TVS diode. The dock station, being switchmode driven, probably was just powering up, overcurrenting, shutting down, trying again [adfinitum].

Will be migrating all data off the drive to a new one, "just in case".
