I got since 2 months a 1 TB western digital my passport HDD.

Maybe in the past, it's true: it has fallen twice from an height of 50 cm.. but I think to be a good user, more than other thousand
I care about my products. However... HDD suddenly, since 1 week, stop to work.

One week ago I worked on It. Disconnected it properly from my macbook

Yesterday ... i was stucked watching this DAMN HDD doing not his job.
Here there is the video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKO1nrpJ4sU
Seems a clicking / slow spin.

WHAT CAN I DO ?

Thank you GURUs

I'm afraid this is not a DIY. If you care about your data, take it to a pro. Having dropped it twice, and now hearing it click that way and moreover if it spins down afterwards, now that's a mechanical issue you are not going to be able to solve without the aid of a few very expensive tools...

P.S.: The freezer thing can cause your hard disk a headcrash THIS BIG. And then no pro could never save your data. Sometimes if done carefully and depending on the failure, it can help a bit... so I wouldn't, but do it at your own risk...

Sorry, pal.

So you've already tried the freezer "trick" ?

It's a myth, and you've quite probably made matters worse :-(

As deftrue says, it's not DIY.

The clicking noise is not the problem, the clicking noise is the result of the problem. There are many clicking noises, so reading a trick from one and applying it to your "clicking noise" is like Russian roulette. Except there are 5 bullets out of 6 and the gun is pointed at your hard disk. And there is not 1 gun there is 1,000.

The clicking noise is your hard disk saying "Go ahead, make my day"

ok, thanks everyone.

Two questions:
1) can i do further attempts? maybe for example leave the HDD connected to MACBOOK for hours? spin up sometimes..i feel very lucky.
:-) ... before bring this HDD back (It's covered by guarantee).

2) On my HDD there are sensible data (work data)...not very important data but sensible.. if i give back to my seller this HDD ... COULD they RECOVER my data if I put a encryption key ? (Passport WD the first time asked me a password and a i set up).

Thank you a lot

Ok, one quick question, after typing in your passphrase in order to get the drive encrypted, have you ever been asked for it, no matter where did you plug it in?

On another hand... if the drive hasn't suffered too much already and they can recover the encryption key (which is not your passphrase) from it, it is still possible, but don't expect it to be easy or cheap.

Deftrue: as soon as i bought this HDD i plug in in my macbook and he asked me if i would like to set a password. I did.

Today happened something very strange: MAYBE a GOOD SIGN!
I was on my macbook with the crap HDD connected : every 5 minutes he tried to spin up but after 4 attemps as usual he close down automatically.

I forgot everything connected because i 've gone out for a beer with my friends...
When i got back on my screen...i heard THE HDD WORKING!! no clicking noise...
He was spinning...not very fast but a very spin noise!
THE MACBOOK DIDN'T SEE IT...but i AM sure..the HDD was working!!

What to do?

mayby you might have a power issue, perhaps your computer is not providing enough power to you drive. Normaly the cable you have would have another connector to connect to another USB port, use two USB ports and you might have the AMPS to get the drive kickstarted.
