Hi,

I am new here in HDDGuru, I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500 GB Model No. ST3500320AS, with the bad firmware, SD15, and here is the problem:

I don't have a desktop computer that uses SATA so I use a SATA-USB box (Tested and worked fine with other drives) Well, the drive spins-up correctly, no bad sounds, but then, we have the clic of death (?), but windows recognizes the drive, but Disc manager don't load, and I cannot open it from Mi PC, HD Tune Pro 5.0 don't open as well :/.

I don't know what happend to that drive, If you need the sound, say to me (is not the regular click of death) and I will upload it.

May anyone tell me how to fix my HDD?

Thanks and Bye.

enon97

Note: I don't care about the data, and the drive isn't important to me, someone gifted to me the drive, but I want to fix it because I'm bored and I want to learn!

Sometimes this type of problem are due to dirty HDA contact on the PCB, try to clean those contacts with a pencil eraser.
However most likely that the problem is related to bad surface or weak heads, nothing you can deal without expensive instruments, also with the proper instruments the drive might not be refurbished.

Try to clean the pcb contacts and connect the drive to a sata motherboard and check it with MHDD!

Thanks for the answer, you mean, the place where PCB contact with the SATA cable, or the places that PCB contact with the HDD cable?

Because you want to learn, i suggest you to begin reading this to understand how hard drives are made inside:
http://hddscan.com/doc/HDD_from_inside.html

However i marked with a red circle the HDA contacts (which connect the pcb with heads):

Wow!

I was reading that page!

I know something about HDD, but, I am Spanish, so in English, I can't say very well the thing I want to.

Well, I'll search for the tool to dissamble the PCD and I'll tell you.

To dissamble the pcb you need only a T6 Torx screwdriver

Thanks you, I cleaned that with 96º alcohol, and I wait until it was dry, now it seems to be slower.

Now, I'll try with a rubber.

99% the 'dirty' contact is not the problem. They often all look 'dirty' after a short amount of time (ROHS), your problem is elsewhere.

I agree too that for the 99% dirty contact isn't the problem, but is always better to clean those since it's very easy.
Before you think fault is most unlikely best to make sure the most trivial things are alright!

No ideas?

I think it could be the firmware.

Could you upload the sound of the noise it makes. You might have a damaged head that's preventing the drive from loading up. Do you remember if the drive was nudged when in operation, or a increase of bad clusters?

Chech the smart status and do a surface scan with MHDD
