Hi folks,

I have in hands a WD MyPassport with a strange behavior.

Model 07A8 according to Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows.
P/N: WDBBEP0010BRD-03

The drive itself is a WD10JMVW - 11S5XS1.

When powered on, the diode lights bright, the drive rotates, and the spindle clicks 6 times, 2 times and 2 times again. Immediately after the last click, the disk stops rotating.
>>> click here to hear the recording of the drive when powered on <<<

Tried with several USB wires and several USB sockets.
The USB connector seemed correctly connected, so a priori no poor electrical contact.

- Windows 7 detects the drive in the disks manager, but the disk is non recognized / not initialized.
- Windows XP detects which driver is required (but installing it does not solve the issue).
- Linux is unable to detect the drive, neither with fdisk -l nor lsblk.

WD's tool "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows" was able to run the extended test and detected:
Code:
Model number : My Passport 07A8
Unit serial number : (skipped here)
Firmware number : 1033
Capacity : 0.00 GB
Smart status not available
Test result : PASS
According to our customer, the hard drive was connected to a laptop that overheated.
Electric shock may have occured.

I watched the printed circuit board which, without does not show visible signs of overheating.

Does anyone have experienced this failure ?

Hey, SOSdonnees!

I'm really sorry to hear about the problem you are facing. I'd like to point out that you did a great job with the troubleshooting.
What I've got so far from the clicking sounds and all the troubleshooting results, I think @w.simon was right. You either have a bad head or PCB.
However, I don't think there's much left to do, except RMA your product: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8
Or you can directly contact our tech support for any further assistance: http://support.wdc.com/contact/contact.asp?lang=en

Hope this helps and good luck!
