Hi there,

I have the following issue

I have a westen digital WD 800... WD800BB-75CAA0.
It got broken, since then, my computer tells me it is a WDC WD1200BB.. and i cannot hear the discs running anymore..

I also have another WD800... WD800BB-00DKA0, this one is still working fine. I placed the Printed Circuit Board of the working one on the broken one... now the disc was running (but "ticking") and according to my computer a WD1600LB was connected...

Then i tried the PCB of the broken one on the working disc... now according to my comuter a WDC WD1200BB was connected again... no disc running.

can you still follow :) :? ????

anyone any idea where the problem is and what i can do now?... i really hope to get back my data..

do you think the PCB is causing this?

thanks in advance!!

Dennis

Hello,

75CAA0 and 00DKA0 pcbs are not interchangeable.
At the moment I cannot look at a DKA0, but I am sure there are plenty of differences in the circuit, so probably swapping the ROM would not solve the problem (if it is possible, since one may be using serial flash and the other one paralel).
Find a similar board first, then it is possible that U can get access to the drive without swapping the ROM, but maybe U will need to swap it.
U should match at least the figures 3-6 of this code (CAA0).
Another way is to repair the defective board by replacing the motor combo to an exactly the same chip, however it is not sure that the problem sources from there.

regards,
pepe

thank you very much for your reaction!

although i do not understand everything you say :(...

do you say that indeed the PCB could be the issue? if that is true; is using a PCB of a hdd with different size, but the same CAA0-code also an possibillity?

what is the rom? is that a chip on the PCB?.... link to an article is enough..

what is or how do i recognize the motor combo?.... link to an article is enough..

i know a lot of people a very expierenced here with hdd-hardware, unfortunately i am not.... sorry for that.

thanks in advance,

dennis

Hello,

U are right, almost, a pcb from a HDD from the same family code but different size might solve the problem if neither HDD have disabled head(s).
ROM is an IC on the PCB that stores a part of FW code. usually 29F102BB, AT49F1024, or the serial: M25P10
Motor combo is the IC driving the spindle and voice coil windings.
It is usually an L72xx located near the contacts for the spindle windings.

pepe

thanks,
Dennis
