Hi all

wondering if any one can provide some assistance with my issue,
i have a seagate 60gb notebook drive, the bios can not detect the drive, upon listening to the sounds frm the drive it is obvious the platter is not spinning, i have had this with a samsung where i opened the drive and weas able to free the platter long enough to recover all the nescessary files.
I opened the drive and when i applied power the drive is not spinning and the platter is frozen, i gently released the platter and the motor is spinning fine, however upon close observation the actual head is physically damaged and hanging to the side, a really bad thing.

as i dont have an identical drive i only have 40gb drives which are single platters not the dual like in the 60, what are the headreplacment guides? must i obtain an identical 60gb seagte drive with same firmware and model no or is there some flexibility? if i do find a new drive with the same model no do i transfer the new head to the old drive or do i transfer the old platters to the new drive?

i know my chances of recovery are very slim but would like ot give it a go to learn as much as possible

any help greatly appreciated and welcome

thx in advance
.

Hi crecomp,

You can use drive with the same firmware, model no is not important in this case and You should transfer the working head to the not working drive. If data is important to You, practice with other drives before.

Hi Pixprit
thx for the answer,

that is what i thought would need to be done,as a general guide when i repalce the head assuming i find the same firmware drive etcare there any other steps i would need to carry out? or will the new head if installed correctly work straight away? do need to enter the drive into some special mode with a speical cable and get things aligned ?
to date all i have done is played with old drives where i have moved the heads of the platters and off the mounting poles and reinstalled them and the drive still worked but that is i guess exactly onto the same factory tuned and aligned drive?

thx for the help and answers.
