Hi all!

Got a 40Gb Hitachi 548 laptop drive with failed head(s), right?

Need data.

Cannot find suitable donor anywhere.

Nearest I have is a 60Gb of same f/w verson and MLC.

Worth a try to fix up the 40Gb (single platter) with the heads from the 60Gb (dual platter)?

I thought of two ways...

1. Snip off the extra heads (!)
2. Use the ramp and head stack from the 60Gb and put in a dummy platter above the 40Gb one for the "spare" heads to land on.

Any better ideas?

Many thanks in advance!!

Sean

Hi,

once I used heads from ATMR in HTS548, it worked, was a bit slower, but nobody cares about that, right? :)
U can also use the head of a 60G, but don't touch the platters, once they are loosen, U will never get it centered again.
the 'spare' head might have to be bent a bit so that it shall not be jammed by the ramp.

regards,
pepe
