I am just wondering with the current technology like SAMSUNG is pushing SSD to the market and you can buy a 1.8" hdd adapter which work with SSD. SSD currently 64Gbytes , although the price is still expensive but it will come down eventually.

Is there any Data Recovery tools in progress on SSD? What are the chances of getting the data if it fails?

i think it is ,,, DR will be gone in 2 to 5 years at the max.

Nonsense,

if I see how much SD cards with controller errors that arrive here, we will have a new business soon.
Dont forget how many harddrives are still beeing used. This will not stop from one day to another. I still get drives from 64 MB ! to recover (20 years or older).

And I also think that SSD drives will remain more expensive then the harddisks we have now. I think there will be a co-excistence, depending on the application.

This statement sound like "Electronics will never fail!"

I don't think there is equipment available yet, but soon it will be.

Read some of the predictions by developing engineers of SSD and you will see that a year ago they predicted 25% reduction in a data recovery needs from SSD, but this year they changed it to 5% reduction.

I predict increase in data recovery needs and increase in price of DR for Solid State Drives.

Flash is absolutely GREAT.... If you only need modest storage, and need a shock-resistant design, and have deep pockets. Yes, Flash keeps getting bigger and cheaper, but so do Hard Drives. Also, demands keep growing. The first new drive I bought was a 120MB for $300. I can now buy a 128MB flash card for a few dollars. That doesn't mean I'm going to use one as my main drive today! Hard Drives have always been cheaper per MB, and likely always will be.

Another issue that everyone seems to overlook... Maybe I'm not up on the absolute latest developments, but from what I understand about Flash, you can only write a finite number of times, maybe as high as 100,000 times. The way Windows likes to write every little thing to the drive (Just imagine what a Swap file would do!), I bet flash drives won't last longer than 3 - 5 years in a normal environment. Trendy people (Macbook Air owners) using these things as cool, silent drives in their general purpose laptops might be looking for Data Recovery services soon :)

I completely agree that SSD will be a new business instead of a threat, it will be a new challenge.
It's true that SSD is growing, but isn't it true that external storage (2.5" and 3.5" usb drives) is growing a lot too? We receive each day external storage to recover, so I think DR business will be here for quite some time.

Interesting topic. I think that SSDs will be more reliable since there will be no mechanical parts, so the repairs will be electronic in nature(do you have a good fast scope?). Also, I think the limit for reliable mechanical drives is being pushed now. I do not think magnetic media can hold much more with reliability than it is being used for now(barring some new technology).

So I think the trend will slowly(2-5 years) go towards SSDs and that their need for repair will go down, based on the fact that only a portion of the drives that need repair now are electronic as opposed to mechanical(motors, heads, etc.).

Also, the electronics for SSDs are simply for storage(with ancillary circuitry), and do not involve precisely interfacing with and controlling mechanical devices.

Just my opinion.
