Smoked Hitachi Deskstar HDS728080PLA380

October 8th, 2008, 0:48

I have a smoked Hitachi Deskstar HDS728080PLA380.

Even the ROM chip is smoked.

Will hot swap work on this drive?

Any ideas?

High probability that preamp smoked too, but the smoke didn't come out the hda... The risk is frying the new pcb, and anyway you at least need the rom...

Hot swap won't work on this.

NVRAM is more-or-less unique for each drive.

Can probably help if in UK, or willing to ship to UK.

Cheers

I can replace the preamp if it is gone.
The big problem is that $%#@ ROM.
Salvation Data's HDD Dr for Hitachi seems like it can do it.
They also claim that PC3000 can't do it.
Anybody know if that is true?
I would really like to do it myself if possible.

Salvation Doctor for Hitachi can read and write NV-RAM. This can be used if corruption occured, but if you have damage to any components to the PCB, it can not help.

NOTE: IF you have a identical drive the salvationdata product can use that NV-RAM to gain access to SA. And there after re-create original NV-RAM config from firmware. I belive there is a NV-RAM backup somewhere on the SA tracks which is used to re-construct the NV-RAM content. As to my knowledge it's the only product that currently provides this function.

Amarbir,
It was no secret, just told him what was logical and worth a try :D

Mate ,
First i Was Pulling you Leg ,Secondly I Honestly Belive There is No NVRAM in the Firmware .What Salvation Does is

We give it a identical family nvram ,Then it searches for some signature in the firmware when it finds that it records that to the nvram we used as donor .Our firmware is then recovered as now we know the location ,After that we save this nvram and then make it search the data area ,It again searches for the same and we have a fully functional drive .

I am a bit short, so please pull both legs, maybe I'll gain a few inches in height

Is that a statement you got from SD support?

Well ok Amarbir,

maybe you are right, I don't know. I don't have any time to do any research on it at the moment. But either way, DRNJ now has a few more things to try with the Deathstar.

DRNJ,
Let us know of your outcome!

I am not a Hitachi Doctor owner, but I rather think they use brute force to find out the SA location on the surface.
...since it is just impossible to know where it is once the NVRAM is gone...

The customer got upset because I was taking too long and took the drive back.
Maybe one of you guys will get it next.
Thanks for all the help. I will have a few more things to try next time.
