broken hdd

hi.. i have problem about a notebook's hdd toshiba 40gb..it is starting boot with ntldr is missing error..when i want to erase it by mhdd program in dos mod,it gives hdd is broken error in the middle of the erasing
what can i do about hdd instead of throw it trash pls help

Probably bad sectors, you can try re-mapping with MHDD.

thanks i ll try..in the begging of the problem hdd's capasity was seen 20gb but it is 40gb.how can that be..any idea?

I partially agree with pcimage : MHDD can't do nothing for worn / damaged surface, its remap feature it's "cosmetic" only remapping, and the drive will be rather slow on the remapped areas. Also, the problem may reappear suddenly. Almost surely the hdd/laptop was subject to shock or simply the HDD is dying. It's better to save the files if possible, and get a new one. Some advanced diagnose can be accomplished with proper gear and eventually fixed with no hiccups if possible but requires complex HW/SW tools.
BTW even PC3000 can do almost nothing for Toshiba because "lack of info". I can do something but it is not worth, it is not a DR case neither a problem : 2,5" drives now cost almost zero.

Re-mapping is only a temporary solution, like Black ST intimated.

Proper hard bad sectors can't be dealt with by MHDD, and the re-mapping is only hiding the problem for a short time, until more bad sectors appear. It ain't gonna get better, only worse!

Now you say it's only seen as 20Gb, just bin the thing, it's not worth the hassle for a $20 drive.
