This seems to be a popular drive on these forums so I guess I am not shocked that I must toss mine into the mix. The drive came out of a MyBook Essential (w/ green button). Upon boot, the drive spins up, clicks 3 times and spins down, spins up again, clicks 3 times and spins down, then nothing.
I took off the controller and there does not seems to be any IC's burnt and the foam looks good. The controller seems ok, I guess, as it does not get hot quickly. I just don't know what to think with this one. It is not being recognized at all, either through a its USB housing or direct SATA connection. The only thing I can see is via the WD Diagnostics in which it says Unknown USB 2199 mb. Further reading indicates that it is a controller failure.
There is not much I need off the drive or that I cannot live without but if anyone wants to try a PCB swap with me, I will be willing to give it a shot. It's quite unfortunate since this is now my second dead WD drive in 2 years, so it will also be my last. Meanwhile, my stupid Maxtor 200gb has been going strong for 5 years being swapped in and out of countless builds.
Thanks,
Jim

Pcb is fine, your problem is the mha (head). You are the proud owner of hitech paperweight, unless you give to a dr firm for recovery. Use the search fx. on the forum and you'll know all the facts.
