Well, at least check the modules for starters.

check firmware. if firmware cannot be accessed, check nv ram, if nv ram ok, check pre amp.

Very common for head failure. Even when no clicking, heads can still be at fault. Can you access SA at all? Does table of modules show accesibility?

(very beginers idea: warning, can ignore) a long while back we had one that did same, (trys to remember if it spun or not) spun up but no read, heads had stuck on the ramp after a jolt. freed them up and all ok. they seem either: to fall of the BACK of the ramp, or to get stuck between platter and ramp.

I'll open the disk again and report when i'm in the lab.

if the heads are really bad, I mean completely broke open or cut the platters badly, these drives don't even move them...

U ARE USING THE WRONG UTIL. (at least) But the problem is probably head related.
as I already mentioned somewhere... I don't remember exactly.

Hi Sempre,

J9 - quite common failure, probably some head not working perfectly.

Mostly media not damaged.
Check heads and if they clean under microscope replace original heads back - works quite often.

If native heads don't work swap with donor.

For research, (if native heads clean) swap native heads into donor - works quite often.

Note : Assumes pcb is perfect.

Seldom see J9 wth fw or nvram problems - like seagate almost always heads.
I think these heads so finely small they just lose location or something like that.

The best option is to read it by heads in Data Extractor and then swap heads later if needed.
If you start reading sequentially or by files it will go clicking very soon.

Actually, I try to connect via USB and would not load. Cannot see in device manager or dir tree. I do a direct connection (laptop) and get BSOD device error.

What other ways can I connect?

delete the IBMOverride.ini and restart utility, use utility for IBM/Hitachi and select your model there, check SA
