MHDD shows 10 UNCs ; can they be clobbered?

Maxtor 6Y060L0 Running MHDD stand alone from CD reports
2 sets of 5 blocks each, beginning at 72817737 thru 72822649.
Can the blocks be rewritten, I don't care about the data.

Additional information:
Smart Data says collection status code:130
self test 20% and previous
self-test completed having the read
element of the test failed.

CheckSum: Fail, 22 (23, 24,, seems to increase each time SMART DATA is issued)

after issuing smart test 127 (abort off line test) and waiting a long time
smart data changes status nn%

Smart test 129 (short captive) runs for 10 seconds then reports command aborted.
Smart test 130 (Ext )runs a few minutes and reports successful.
now smart data reports off-line data collection status: Never started, checksum: OK

NO. Your drive must be serviced with proper gear. It's an old drive with worn head and likely worn surface. A new 250 G costs under 50 eur/$ . If you believe in bullshit, try everything you find on the net. As a reference, I can solve your problem - recertify your drive and remove every error BUT the drive could be cut to 40 G, or could not survive at all, if successful, you have a working drive with SMART OK.

simply rewriting those sectors will resolve the issue?

BlackST: I do understand your point.
It is hard to justify spending a couple hours of time to rescue an old drive
when I can buy a new better/faster/bigger drive for $50.

Is possible, like anything in this world, but i won't rely on it. I think it's just getting old and repairing would cost you ten times more than new drive.

If you don't care about the data, give up, that's my advice too.
