MAXTOR questions (general and not general)

October 21st, 2008, 4:52

Hy gurus,

My first question is this:

I have some 6L080L042 drive with weak H2.
I want to repair these drives like disabling the H2.

Somebody know, what do i need to modify in the SA to de-allocate the H2?

I have tried to remove from 1F, but the drive still reserve the space, and freeze when i want to reach.
Translator regeneration not works.

Wich module i need to modify?

I know, i can do it automatically with selfscan, but i want to know, how can i modify with my own hand. :)

Thanks,

Janos

Impossible. You have to mod ROM and write with salvation/pc3000 PCI. We discussed online this issue !!

P.s. Selfscan does a weak head test and makes everything easy. Give it a try - it will probably become 60 or 40.

remove head !
The #1f #1e #93...must be modfiy

Does Pc3000 allow head calibrations on the new version? like 66/67 ?

I am not so sure about this.
The selfscan modify the rom?
I think, no.

I need to modify the rom only, when i want to move the SA from H3 to H2, because the H3 is weak.
But on my case, the H2 is weak. :)

Or i have missed something?

Agree, removing the head is the safest way, before it is crashed....

1F - done. :)
1E - Adaptives. :| Can i modify correctly this without ss?
93 - ? i will take a look in.... :)

PS:
I have found this string in some module: "deallocated heads" or similar....
This is interesting in this case?

Thanks,

Janos

Selfscan does not change ROM but changes almost everything including zone table and the rest, accordingly. Unless you know how to decode RZTBL and all the rest... :D If you change the rom the overall process takes about 2 minutes. P.S. YOU judged the head "weak" , but maybe a selfscan could reset the pertinent settings and the drive can work again. Why reinvent hot water ?

If your into firmware digging check out Maxtor Diag command 0x04 (Set/Get Drive config) :O) look for GMAP

Or u can cut the head from zone table editing module 93 .

Rom is definitive, firmware makeup not.

Another maxtor specific question for gurus:

I have seen on some Calypso drives, if i move the G to P in ISA, the drive only wants to move SOME sectors, and SOME not.

I have not found context between the moved and not moved and the error type, but it is interesting!

Exactly i have one drive, one 80G (2 head) wich doing the following:
1 G->P
2 clear smart
3 Fill with FF
4 read the smart -> looks like >2000 reallocated in G, the drive is failing, and have some (40-50) pending too.
5 goto 1. :D

I have repeated more times, the issue is the same.
The drive is good, but don't want to move some sectors from G to P.
Only removes these from G, and with testing, goes back in G.
Why?

And how can i force to really move to P? :)

Thanks,
Janos

Move G to P and check if G still has any sectors in there.

If you are moving sectors to P, but they are not moving you have SA/Translator issue.

If they moved, but after writting over that area they will show in G again, that means you have a deep scratch, which still pops up. You can move those sectors many times, but this drive won't last long.

Sorry, i forget one step.

1 G->P
2 clear smart
3 regen the translator
4 Fill with FF
5 read the smart -> looks like >2000 reallocated in G, the drive is failing, and have some (40-50) pending too.
6 goto 1. :D

The entire SA is good, readable, writable.
The drive is good, i am sure, have no scratch, only some lean sectors.
If i fill the drive with 0x00 or 0x55 or 0xAA these sectors not comes out.
This is why i starts the test with FF.
The most sectors are reallocated during the fill step.
And some on the read back step.

This is not the first drive with this issue, but the others only have 700-800 similar sectors, and after these goes to G, the drive is error free, fast, and trustable.
But this one have too many, more than 2000, (Max G 2555) and the smart shows the FAIL state caused by these sectors.

(i have got these drives from the same group. 22 equal drive, made in one factory on one day)

Any idea?

Thanks,
Janos

hello,
1,have you check all the module for thsi drive?
2,would you like to tell me how many head have for this drive? 2? head 3 is main?
if main head is 3,you only cut 2 head and revise the module will be fine. no need to do anything with ROM

Hello.

1. the entire SA is good.
The modules are good, the drive comes to me like working drive, but only have some bad sectors.
This why the service replaced previously.

2. 6Y080L042A223 all drive, with all YAR41KW0 (IBM FRU), all have only H3 and H2.

Sorry, but i can't cut one head, i only have ISA.

I only need the drive for not too important purpose + learning while repairing it.

Thanks,
Janos

Friends,

Somebody know, where comes from the 5V in Calypso board to the 3.3V regulator?
I have more pcbs, wich missing the imput voltage in the regulator, but if i short the pin2 to the 5V the drive becomes ready.

Thanks,
Janos

Hi gurus,

Somebody have any solution to reading out the calypso/N40P/Sabre/Falcon pcbs internal ROM wich is inside the mcu?
The external is not interesting, i can read out with a clip.
But i am searching for a solution to read/update the boards wich have no external rom.

Thanks,
Janos
