MK6022GAX compatability

October 28th, 2008, 1:36

hello all
i have a Toshiba mk6022gax with what appears to be a faulty head, the problem appears to be the usual clicking noises coming from the drive.

the only drive i have in stock is a mk6026GAX and i believe i saw in a previous post that heads in toshibas can be changed with similar models, can anyone confirm if this head will be compataible for the job on hand ?

Besides the head swap is there generally anything that that one needs to be aware off when doing these swaps, do any controllers needs to also be changed over at the same.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
thank you

Visually compare the two sets of heads; if they appear identical in design then it will likely work. (Unfortunately I don't remember if these two models have interchangeable heads.) There are really no other considerations to take into account when swapping heads on Toshibas. PCB swaps, of course, require ROM swap.

thankyou for the reply.

i found an identical drive and replaced the heads, there dosent appear to be anymore a clicking noise, however what seems to be happening and this was happening sometimes prior to the head replacement is that the drive spins up for about 10 seconds, you cant hear the heads seeking, spins down, it does this about 3 times and then stops spinning.

when connected to the pc3000 the only light that comes on is the bsy light

i susoect i may have a problem with the board, will i need to change the rom chip at the same time with a board swap or can i backup the modules from the patient drive and then then apply them to the donor drive with the pc3000

thx in advance

Over toshiba the most SA its a Mp, at toshiba GAX we had check some media problems at some models, but its not knocking, its a grinding noise, at some cases reach DRDY DSC,

Ddi you check the motor ? It could be a motor seizure

Meow is correct- Toshibas frequently have problems with motor seizure; make sure drive is spinning up to proper speed. If it is, then PCB swap with ROM swap is called for.

Beto,

You have a bad motor bearing. Swapping platters & heads is simple with this model.

Btw you mean unstable or low speed?

hello jono

at that case wich i was talking was GAX Family too some years ago, not knock but was grinding noise,, we tried head,PCB exchange of course soldering ROM at patient ARM ic , platter exchange ,head map etc ,but we can get some data, that was the report from the zone table, never find the solution, but we can get some data, trying to control by different algoritghms, like u can see that looks like damaged over SA inside Mp , and zone tables..

after some more testing it looks like the motor is not spinning freely, so it loks like this is the issue, i have ordered the platter swap tool from salvtion in order to do a platter swap, will kep you posted,

thank you for all the info so far

I think its better to use the next coming HPE SP (with spacers),
