Maxtor One Touch III 2TB Raid - Click sound

October 28th, 2008, 23:09

I have a Maxtor One Touch III, it's 2 - 1TB drives mirrored in a Raid 0. I fired it up today and I hear a clicking sound and it won't mount. Praying that both drives didn't fail at the same time is there a way to check each drive to see which one is broken or to set it up so it only fires up one drive at a time so it will hopefully mount if both aren't broken?

I have the worst track record with HD failing at the worst moments.

If they are in RAID0, you're screwed. If they are mirrored, you're fine. Then again, if they were mirrored, you'd get 1TB instead of 2TB. Screwed. If the data is important, now is the time to face the fact this will be expensive.

bad maxtor terabyte drives? ouch. I guess they are probably actually seagates... that is going to be $$$ due to the likelihood of platter spacers in there.

Hi,

You said: it's 2 - 1TB drives mirrored in a Raid 0.
What do you mean "mirrored in a raid0"?
Since you only have two 1TB drives, it should be either Mirroring(Raid1) or RAID0(striping).
To combine mirroring with Raid0 you need at least 4 drives.

If it is mirroring: Removing faulty drive may solve the problem as a temporary solution.
If it didn't work, just pick "not clicking" drive and recover your data using UFS
Explorer or any other good recovery software.

If it is Raid0: Then ask any Guru here who is nearby you for a professional assistance.

Ouch ouch ouch...

I have this box. I also posted a video on Youtube how to open it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLJoYb9-6R0

The drives inside are Seagate 7200.11 series.

By default, this box is configured as RAID 0. If any one drive fails, you lose all data.

It's not just expensive, but very expensive. These drives are new technology that represents genuine pain and for which we do not yet have special tools readily available, although some gurus have figured it out. Additionally, the RAID 0 needs to be reassembled. This requires about 4 TB of temporary storage just to get the work done. Figure on a $2000+ bill.

I recieved 1 of these for recovery, it clicked on powering. There were Seagates inside, but unfortunately 1 disk had platter damage, so bad the filter was black! I guess heads had failed and this was the result of many re-powering attempts.
