Can I use PCB from same model ST3500820AS but diff Firmware

November 2nd, 2008, 10:02

Hi all,

I need to change the PCB of 500GB seagate HDD with these specifications:

Model No. ST3500820AS (7200.11)
Firmware: LC11

I have found the same model number HDD but with a different firmware. Will it work?

Or I need the same firmware and same model.

Please help..

Thanks

Hi. It probably won't work at all.
If you explained what problem you are trying to fix somebody might be able to offer better advice.

No, it won't work.

It seems that the ROM on the PCB on these is unique to the drive.

I experimented with two IDENTICAL drives from a RAID 0 configuration, and swapped the PCB's over. Neither of them worked, untill I physically swapped over the ROM from each one, then they both worked perfectly.

Why do you think the PCB is at fault?

Simple pcb swap won't work. Period.

Thanks all for prompt response.

I am really a newbie as far as recovering HDD is concerned.

My main HDD (ST3500820AS) as mentioned above stop responding. It is not recognized in bios. I have tried changing to diff PC, SATA cables etc. but it is not recognized in bios setup. The bios takes lots of time to start (apparently it tries to recognize the HDD), but it finally don't recognize it at all. I have important data on it - without backup :(

There is no other noise etc in HDD, and I was advised by some ppl here to try to change the PCB of this disk. Which is why I am trying to get one.

I am based in Gurgaon / Delhi (India). Please advise me how to proceed.

Thanks a lot...

Best regards,

Sanjay

If the data is very important to you, the way to go is to take it to a Pro.

Based on your symptoms, I suspect if you listen closely, you will hear faint sounds. Almost all of the causes will be for a Pro.

Was there any success on this?
I have same problem with same hd
mine spins the same way the new one i bought does so i assume the motor has no problem.
I wanted to do the same and swap the PCB but the chips on them seem quite different and they wont work after swapping.

Is there something I can do?
