Maxtor N40P - Bios etc recognize's

November 2nd, 2008, 18:28

Hello everyone.

I have a Maxtor 6E040L0 with thé N40P / NAR6159Z problem.

My bios recognize the hard drive properly. It gives the 40 GB that the HD has..

Windows (Vista) also recognizes the HD (When i first hooked it up in vista it was looking for drivers). The HD is also showing up in Task Manager. Tough it's not showing up in "My Computer".

If i use Seatools, it also recognizes the HD, and all properly with 40 GB..

So i guess (i hope) this is easy to fix because everything recognize's the HD properley with 40 GB ?

What program i should use to fix this?

I'm sorry for my bad English.. I hope it's a little read-able.

I hope someone can help me because i need that HD..
Thanks in advance !

You can use Pc3000 or Salvation hd doctor for Maxtor. They are hw+sw tools. And of course you know how Maxtor drives work and their firmware. Still thinking it's easy?

Hy DaxDimi,

Your drive have SA corruption / damage.
If you want the HDD, simply forget it.
If you want the data from the hdd, it is a time to seek for some professional help!

Where are you based?

In safe mode your drive won't spin at all. If you either want to have the drive REPAIRED/RECERTIFIED loosing the data or a recovery PM me for details. Can give you a special 'hddguru' offer.

If drive spins and detects OK, you can see it via device manager, there is option that it's not mapped on your OS. That is just what I get your post. So is the drive formatted to support filesystem that your OS can handle? Is the drive mapped to some letter?

If my computer cannot see drive, it doesn't mean that drive isn't functioning properly.

Just in case... sorry if i'm wrong, but that comes to my mind after that explanation.

pasiz,

This drive changed the FW letter code to NAR6159Z.
This tell as, the SA have some damage, and can't be used.
Only the PCB shows up its native label, like N40P, and the size 40GB, because this is the default in this family.

Something puzzling here: you say the drive is recognized as N40P but yet you say it is recognized properly in the BIOS and Windows Vista correctly identifies it as a 40gb drive? This sounds inconsistent with the symptom: normally, when a Maxtor is seen as N40P the drive will not be seen by the OS at all. Please indicate again exactly what BIOS message says.

Hi, was reading your post, I had the exact same problem you have.
The firmware on the Surface Area of the platter was corrupted.
I ended up purchasing hard drive recovery tools from Salvation data and was able to recover my data. Some will say I was foolish to spend that amount of money just to recover some data. I don't regret spending the $$$, as I've already done quite a few side recoveries and have reached the halfway point in breaking even.

Let me know if you need some help in recovering the data, I can help you out.

best of luck......

mmmmmm, COOKIES!!!!

Sometimes the model is identified correctly, but FW code is abnormal. This sounds like the case here. Professional help is the best advice here. Maybe someone can offer a nice HDDGURU discount, seems to be a lot of them going on here :D
