Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts
November 5th, 2008, 23:38
Hi All,
I run a small data recovery business and own a PC-3000 UDMA and Salvation Data tools. I have received 6 Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1 TB hard disks this week from different customers.
The disk sounds normal and reports always BSY in PC-3000. I believe this is a firmware problem but do not have the ability, skill and knowledge required to solve this problem. I have been having to outsource this to a larger data recovery firm overseas that seems to be able to recover these in 1-2 days time once they get the disks.
I am willing to pay $800 US for detailed information on how to solve this problem. Please send me a PM if you can help me.
Thanks.
Zed.

Email sent, can anybody else help?

At present, you better outsource...
November 6th, 2008, 3:29
BlackST, do you outsource this problem? I don't want to be outsourcing forever, i need to find a solution to do this in-house like most other problems. I hate to have to tell a customer - sorry, i can't help, go to this other company.

I'm begining to think the 7200.11 hard drive line was created to increase Seagates recovery profits. For new technology it sure is junk.

seagate-st3500320as-unable-jump-terminal-t9590.html#p57626PS I can repair firmware problems in 7200.11 but not in all cases

(I need more HDDs for testing)

Thanks Mikippp, i am more interested in learning the method of getting the data back from these disks, i have seen many over the past few weeks. I am not trying to solve 1 particular case - just wanting to pay for an expert for some advice from somebody with experience with these problems.
I know that in the cases i sent away to another firm, it always came back un-opened (no warranty seal opened). Anybody willing to help me and be reimbursed by an Australian not competing with you directly- please send me a PM.

I just found this article on a forum, not sure if it's related but it was interesting anyway:

Barracuda 7200.11 Reporting Wrong Cache Size
Seagate has recently discovered that some of Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives with firmware version SD04 or SD14 will report an incorrect cache size.
The discrepancy is due to the firmware incorrectly identifying the cache size during the buffer size auto detection algorithm. This incorrect value will be passed from the drive, via the “Identify Drive” command to the system BIOS, which in turn reports the incorrect cache size.
The following Barracuda 7200.11 models have been impacted:
ST3500320AS PN 9BX154-302 with firmware code SD04 or SD14
ST3750330AS PN 9BX156-302 with firmware code SD04 or SD14
ST31000340AS PN 9BX158-302 with firmware code SD04 or SD14
For all inventory with the Seagate P/Ns mentioned, a simple firmware update is needed to resolve this issue. No action required for -302 with firmware code AD14. Additionally, no action on your part is required for the Barracuda 7200.11 drives that have already been shipped to end users – Seagate will provide end user support at the Seagate Support Web Site.
Provided below is the link to the code upgrade utility which will complete reloading of corrected firmware for all Seagate models. The new Firmware release is AD 14.

Is it relevant to DR though? Will this udpate potentially fix a HDD failure? I doubt it, but who knows?

maybe somebody should try. post results here.

I have a seagate 7200.11 with firmware HP12. The drive aquires fin in bios but is not there when the computer boots. On mhdd drive shows as ready but can not id and just times out saying the drive is not ready. Any help appreciated.

after updating the drive you will (probably) need to leave the drive for at least 90 seconds to do some funky stuff before you can use it.
This certainly happens when updating from 3.AEG to 3.AEJ on some Seagates. Also, if you reboot before the 90 secs it will start the routine off again.

update firmware in this BSY or 0bytes case will not remedy the problem.

TerraNova, i know - this won't help. I just saw this article and thought it may be related. I guess not.
Anybody willing to teach me? If so - please send me a PM. I have had a few interesting offers from several people so far. Looking to see if anybody really knows how to fix this - several forum members sent me PM's saying 'send it to me, i can fix it' but were not able to tell me how it can be done - i'm prepared to pay for the knowledge. I have the tools to do it, just not the method...like most of the people on this forum it seems. There are a couple of people includinig doomer who seem to know the trick to this problem. I just need somebody kind enough to share with an Aussie who is not competing with you from the other side of the planet.

whats stopping you from selling your knowledge to someone on the other side of the planet? the same side as the person who sold it to you? They are not competing with you, right? so it's ok.
November 7th, 2008, 7:05
HDD Spaz, that's a very negative way to think. I simply want to learn how to fix a problem which is becoming more common. I am offering to pay for the advice, not hasseling people to get free advice.
If you can help me - send me a PM. I am willing to trade information i have, spare parts and future knowledge if i can be of help to somebody in exchange. You can never have too many friends in the DR business. By helping each other, we all provide better service and recovery results in this increasingly competitive industry.
