I've just killed a WD2000JB-98GVAO Hard disk by inverting +5 and +12 volts (!!!) ...

I would like to know if I can change this PCB board (98GVAO) with a WD2000JB-00GVAO ??

you need to check the part number on the PCB itself... will look like 2060-701335-001 REV A or similar.

There is no sigificance to the 00 or 98, this just pertains to the oem who the drive was made for.

BUT the 2060-xxxxxx-xxx does matter, and you almost certainly will have to swap the ROM, unless you're very lucky and have a perfect DCM match.

I can understand the external connected to a notebook charger, and have even seem it a few times, but not this.

I attached a Fujitsu Tablet power cord to my WD 3200 by mistake. The result was it did not pass the smoke test. The PWB is a 2600-701444-003 Rev A. I bought another hard drive on ebay that had the same PWB. It powers up, but the PC cannot see the drive. Any suggestions

HDDS I appreciate your honesty. I may have misunderstood the intention of this forum. Most of the recovery services I have talked to want an tidy sum of cash to recover what I would term sentimental data and not repair the board or drive. I am surrounded by professionals in my environment and was just asking for advice.

Your new board requires reprogramming in order to match a microcode of your drive.
This could be done with special equipment.
The cost should be reasonable.

I am located in Montgomery Alabama. I would very much appreciate finding the closest reliable member. Most of the data recovery services I have contacted want between $900 and $3,000 to recover the data on the drive. That's just a little out of my range.
