Western Digital PCB board compatibily request ...

November 13th, 2008, 12:26

Hi ,

I've just killed a WD2000JB-98GVAO Hard disk by inverting +5 and +12 volts (!!!) ...

I would like to know if I can change this PCB board (98GVAO) with a WD2000JB-00GVAO ??

Thank you very much for your help ...

Have a nice day

yes, if you move the rom and the pcb code matches.

Hi,
thank you very much for your help ...
May i ask you more precision about what i have to do in order to swap the 00GVAO board with the original one (98GVAO) ?

Do i have to desolder the 00GVAO firmware chip and solder the 98GVAO at the same place ?

Thank you very much for your patience ...

you need to check the part number on the PCB itself... will look like 2060-701335-001 REV A or similar.

There is no sigificance to the 00 or 98, this just pertains to the oem who the drive was made for.

BUT the 2060-xxxxxx-xxx does matter, and you almost certainly will have to swap the ROM, unless you're very lucky and have a perfect DCM match.

Which steps does the process "swap the rom" entail?

Step 1: click search.
Step 2: type in request. (example; wd rom swap)
Step 3: read posts.

Some people find this difficult for some reason...

(no) Thanks for the snarky reply.

Where were you 4 months ago when the OP asked the same question? :)

If it's so common a question, why no sticky?

Hmm, seems your snark is misplaced (troubles at home?)

I've also lost my 'Snark'.

Maybe a 'snark' is something desirable and of value in 2009. Maybe the 'snarks' were not misplaced, but Stolen! :o

Maybe our 'Snark's' were stolen to feed a crack addiction?

God Damn those pesky 'Snarks'!

Ok, I'll shut up now. To many happy pills this morning.

This isn't a "tutorials for amateurs" forum.

How do you switch the +5 and +12 wires?

I can understand the external connected to a notebook charger, and have even seem it a few times, but not this.

With a little force applied, you can do magic
Unfortunately, Case-Mon can't apply any brain power.

I attached a Fujitsu Tablet power cord to my WD 3200 by mistake. The result was it did not pass the smoke test. The PWB is a 2600-701444-003 Rev A. I bought another hard drive on ebay that had the same PWB. It powers up, but the PC cannot see the drive. Any suggestions

HDDS I appreciate your honesty. I may have misunderstood the intention of this forum. Most of the recovery services I have talked to want an tidy sum of cash to recover what I would term sentimental data and not repair the board or drive. I am surrounded by professionals in my environment and was just asking for advice.

Your new board requires reprogramming in order to match a microcode of your drive.
This could be done with special equipment.
The cost should be reasonable.

Tell us where you are located, so we could refer you to closest, reliable forum member.

I am located in Montgomery Alabama. I would very much appreciate finding the closest reliable member. Most of the data recovery services I have contacted want between $900 and $3,000 to recover the data on the drive. That's just a little out of my range.
