Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi guys,
I am not too "electronically technical" so will explain my problem in simple terms.
I have a Maxtor DiamondMaxx 500 gb drive that was installed into a desktop PC that already had a Seagate 160gb SATA drive that contains Windows XP. Everything has been working fine until a few days ago when I noticed that the 500 gb drive disappeared from Windows Explorer. I rebooted, went into the BIOS and both drives where displayed correctly.
I have spent the last few days unplugging and swapping things and many reboots but Windows still does not see the drive and now the BIOS is seeing the Maxtor DiamondMaxx as a Grizzley with 0 gb!
I have downloaded a number of software products to see if they could "see" the drive within Windows but still no luck.
Does anybody have any idea what I can do to recover this drive?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Regards
Greg
